Welcome Letter

Welcome to Business Law!

What to Expect

This course is structured into weekly lectures in accordance with the Official Course
Outline. You can expect to learn about business law and how these laws affect the
operation of businesses in Canada. This online course will offer students an opportunity
to attend scheduled Collaborative Sessions and participate in Poll Questions,
Participation Exercises and Discussion Forums. I encourage you to take advantage of
these learning opportunities.

The weekly course materials will be released 2 weeks in advance.

I have released the Week 1 and Week 2 materials. Select the “Content” tab above to
view the Weekly materials that have been posted.

The Critical Path

The Critical Path is found under “Content”, “Getting Started”. The Critical Path sets out
the topics and readings for each week, along with the due dates for participation
exercises, tests, and assignments. During the course, there will be a number of
collaborative sessions, discussion forums, and participation exercises. The participation
exercises will count toward your participation grade.

Study Tips for this Course

Here are some study tips that may assist you:

On weekly basis:

 Check to Critical Path regularly and make note of the due dates
 Complete the readings and make study notes
 Review the lecture materials posted for each week
 Participate in the collaborative sessions and discussion forums
 Review the Weekly Objectives each week to ensure you have completed
everything
 Complete the true or false and multiple-choice questions at the end of each
chapter and review the answers (the answers are posted under each weekly
folder)
 Complete the Participation Exercises; the exercises count toward your final
grade; they are an easy way to accumulate marks
If you have questions relating to the course or should you need help, you can reach me
through Blackboard email. For purposes of this course, we will be using Blackboard
messagesl. (Please do not use my Humber email.)

Getting Started:

Critical Path and Major Due Dates

The Critical Path will provide you with an overview of the weekly lesson plans, readings,
due dates, and how the grades are allocated to assignments, tests, participation
exercises, and the final exam.

Select the “Content”, and then select “Getting Started” tab/link to access the Official
Course Outline and the Critical Path. The Critical Path provides you with an overview of
the course.

In addition to the Critical Path, Weekly Objectives are posted within each Weekly
Folder (under the tab entitled Learning Materials). The Weekly Objectives will also
assist you in keeping track of weekly tasks and due dates.

Collaborative Sessions on MS Teams

Live Collaborative Sessions will be delivered throughout the course on MS Teams. A


link to the Session will be posted on the course website 24 hours in advance.

The dates for the Collaborate Sessions are listed in the Critical Path. If you miss the
live session you will be able to watch the recording.

The recordings of the Collaborative Sessions will be posted under the weekly lecture
material.

If you miss a live session, you can access it by going to the lecture materials for that
week. The recording will be posted there.

Other Collaborative Activities

Other collaborative activities will include Poll Questions and Discussion Forums on
various topics throughout the course.

Grading and Allocation of Grades

Students must achieve a minimum weighted average of 50% on the 3 tests to


successfully complete the course (35% of the available 70%). Students who fail to
demonstrate this minimum level of competency will receive a minimum final grade of
45% and will be required to retake the course.
Due to the comprehensive nature of the final exam, students must achieve a mark of
50% or higher on the final exam to pass the course. Students who do not pass the final
exam will be given a maximum mark of 45% for the course.

Learning Material

Under the “Content” tab, a folder is created for each week. Lecture materials will be
posted under each folder. Learning materials are released two weeks in advance.

Learning Objectives

Learning Objections will be posted in each weekly folder under the Learning Materials.
The learning objectives for each week will assist you in staying on track with your
studies for that particular week. It will also identify due dates and collaborative sessions
for that week. The Learning Objectives are aligned with the Critical Path.

Week 1

We have two activities for Week 1: Introductions and Exercise 1: Poll Question. The
Introductions are voluntary. Exercise 1: Poll Question is worth 1% of your final grade.

How to Contact Your Instructor

For all communications related to the course, please email me (Laura Alescio) through
Blackboard email and I will respond within a 48-hour window. If you have questions
relating to the course or should you need help, you can reach me through Blackboard
email. (Please do not use my Humber email.)

Participation Exercises

Participation Exercises have been created throughout the course. The Participation
Exercises are designed to assist you with your review of the material that was covered
that week. These exercises will also provide you with an opportunity to see the format
of the questions that you can expect to see on the Tests and the Final Exam.

The Participation Exercises are collectively worth 10% of your final grade. Please note
that the participation grade differs from the Official Course Outline. These exercises are
an excellent way to accumulate marks.

Missing Due Dates

Please contact me through Blackboard email if you are unable to write a test,
participation exercise, final exam, or complete an assignment by the due date. Each
request will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please note that a doctor's note
may be requested for missed tests and the final exam.
Textbook:

We will be using the textbook extensively in this course. The textbook and was written
specifically for this course. It is an excellent resource for the study of Business Law.
You will need the most current version of the textbook for this course.
