SYSTRONICS A Division of Systronics (India) Ltd.
1.0 INTRODUCTION
SYSTRONICS uC based Dissolved Oxygen Meter 314 is a battery operated portable
instrument for estimation of dissolved oxygen (D.O.) and temperature measurement in
water, wastewater and biological applications. Dissolved oxygen is measured in ppm (parts
per million) over a range of 0 to 20 ppm with 0.1 ppm resolution and Temperature is
indicated in degrees centigrade from 0 to +50.0° C. The dissolved oxygen measurement is
automatically temperature compensated for solubility of oxygen in water and permeability
of the probe membrane. Barometric and salinity compensation is automatic. Calibration,
LCD.
salinity, pressure entry and measurements are displayed by a
The probe supplied with the unit is a special Clark-type membrane covered polarographic
sensor. A PT100 probe is also supplied for temperature measurement. A thin, permeable
membrane stretched over the sensor isolates the sensor elements from the environment, but
allows oxygen to enter. When a polarising voltage is supplied across the sensor, oxygen
that has passed through the membrane reacts at the cathode, causing a current to flow.

4.0 INSTALLATIONand CHECKOUT
The DO Meter 314 is a customer installed instrument. Before installation go through the
following section carefully:
4.1 GENERAL CONSIDERATION
Every unit is carefully packed when it leaves the factory. But it is advisable to check the
unit for any apparent damage. Do not operate the instrument if visual inspection is not
satisfactory.
4.2
4.2 POWER SUPPLY REQUIREMENT
This unit is battery operated and hence does not require mains outlet. It uses one 9 volt
small battery, e.g. Everyday 216, Hi-Watt 6F22 or equivalent (not supplied). While
inserting fresh battery please ensure correct polarities.
Instrument can work on 9V adapter.
Battery box is at the bottom of the instrument. The lid of battery box can easily be removed,
by removing two screws holding it.
5.0 OPERATING PROCEDURE
5.1 PROBE PREPARATION
5.1.1 MECHANICAL CONFIGURATION
The D.O. probe consists of 5 main parts, namely, (1) main stem (2) electrode cover (3)
sleeve (4) membrane and (5) Bakelite nut.

The main stem is made of Perspex with gold electrode at lower end and silver ferrule fully
cable and a connector. The main

Useful life of membranes depends on usage. Average replacement is 1-2 weeks. However,
should the electrolyte be allowed to
evaporate and an excessive amount of bubbles form
under the membrane, or the membrane become
damaged, thoroughly flush the electrode
with KCl and install a new membrane. Also
replace the membrane if erratic readings are
observed or calibration is not stable.
The gold cathode should always be
bright and untarnished. To clean, wipe with a clean lint-
free cloth or hard paper. NEVER USE ANY FORM OF ABRASIVE OR
CHEMICAL.
Rinse the sensor several times with KCI, refill, and install a new membrane.
5.2 PREPARING THE INSTRUMENT
1. Switch on the instrument. (Power switch is located on the left
side)
Attach the prepared DO probe to the PROBE connector.
3 (Located at rear side)
Allow15 minutes to polarise the probe. Depolarise whenever the instrument has been OFF
or the
probe has been disconnected.
Note: Here after the DO probe and Temperature probe combined will be referred as PROBE.
5.3 AIR CALIBRATION
Experience has shown that air calibration method is quite reliable, yet far simpler than the
other methods. Air calibration method is given below:
1. Place the PROBE in moist air. For this, PROBE can be wrapped loosely in a
damp cloth
taking care the cloth does not touch the membrane. Wait approximately 10 minutes for
temperature stabilisation
8
2 After 10 minutes press mmHg key to see and/or change atmospheric pressure. You can
change pressure by up (A) and down ( ) key. Press ENTER key to store new value and/or
calibration if you neglect
exit from pressure mode. Old value is taken in measurement or
this step. (You can use table 1 to convert from altitude value to mmHg.)
Press SAL (ppt) key to see and/or change salinity in parts per thousand You
3 (ppt). can
change salinity by up (A) and down (V) key. Press ENTER key to store new value and/or
exit from salinity mode. Old value is taken in measurement orcalibration .if you neglect this
step.
4 Press AIR CAL key to do air calibration automatic. LCD will display AIR CAL message.
Wait for 30 second.
5. Press ENTER key to do calibration. And LCD display new ppm value according to
temperature.
6 PressTemp/DO to escape AIR Calibration.
5.4 ZERO CALIBRATION
1. Add sodium sulphate, NaSOs, crystals approx. in proportion of 2 mg per litre of
Distilled water and trace of cobalt chloride CoCl2.
should
2. Place probe in this solution. This will bring the DO in solution to zero. The reading
comedown approximately 0.5 ppm and stabilises afterapproximately 5 minutes.
3 Press ZERO CAL key. LCD shows "ZERO CAL" message. Wait for 30 seconds.
A. Press ENTER key to confirm Zero calibration. The reading must be set zero for good probe,
otherwise indicates "ERROR" message.
9
Press TEMP/DO to escape Zero calibration.

6.0 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The DO Dissolved oxygen (DO) is the small amount of oxygen that is dissolved in the
water. This oxygen is vital to fish, other aquatic animals, microorganisms and plants, which
depend upon it for the process of respiration, i.e. to "breathe'. Maintenance of healthy and
diverse aquatic ecosystems depends on oxygen levels being maintained at consistently high
levels. Reductions in DO levels result in loss of the more sensitive species. At very low DO
levels, only very few species may be present.
Level is also a useful indicator of water quality. It can tell us how a water body is behaving
and it can indicate the presence of certain pollutants, particularly organic matter (matter that
has come plants and animals e.g. fallen leaves, animal manure, sewage effluent).
from
In water
quality applications, such as aquaculture (including fish farming) and wastewater
treatment, the level of DO must be kept high. For aquaculture if the D0 level falls too low
the fish will suffocate. In sewage treatment, bacteria decompose the solids. If the DO level
is too
low, the
bacteria will die and decomposition ceases; if the DO level is too
energy is wasted in the aeration of the water. With industrial applications including boilers,
high,
the make-up water must have low D0 levels to prevent corrosion and boiler scale build-up
which inhibits heat transfer.
