specific parts of the body. Catheters come in different
types, sizes, and materials, tailored to the specific medical
need and the area of the body they are intended for.

thin tube, called a catheter, is inserted into the body to drain
fluids, deliver medication, or perform diagnostic tests in
specific areas like the bladder, blood vessels, or the heart.

Medication or Fluid Administration: They are utilized to deliver

medications, fluids, nutrients, or contrast agents directly into specific
parts of the body, including blood vessels, the urinary tract, or other
hollow organs.

Diagnostic Procedures: Catheters aid in diagnostic tests by allowing

access to various areas of the body, such as cardiac catheterization to
examine the heart's blood vessels or urinary catheterization to
investigate bladder function.

Correct Catheter Selection: Choosing the appropriate type,
size, and material of the catheter is crucial.
Patient Comfort , Privacy and Informed consent: Ensuring
patient comfort, dignity, and privacy during catheterization
procedures is vital. : Prior to catheterization, healthcare
providers must obtain informed consent from the patient
Proper Insertion Technique: Following established protocols
and guidelines for insertion techniques minimizes the risk of
trauma, discomfort, and complications.
Secure Fixation: Once inserted, ensuring the catheter is
securely fixed or anchored prevents accidental dislodgement,
reduces discomfort, and minimizes the risk of complications.
Ongoing Monitoring and Maintenance: Continuous monitoring
of the catheterized site and regular assessment for signs of
infection, blockages, or other issues are crucial
Timely Removal or Replacement: Catheters should be
removed as soon as they are no longer necessary to minimize
the risk of complications.

Catheterization refers to the medical procedure involving the insertion of a thin tube called a catheter into a patient's
body for various diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. In all cases, adherence to established protocols, sterile
technique, patient comfort, and diligent post-procedural care are essential for successful and safe catheterization
outcomes .

Catheterization is used for various medical purposes across different fields of healthcare due to its ability to provide
access to specific internal structures or systems within the body. Here are some common reasons why catheterization is
utilized: Urinary Retention or Incontinence, Surgical Procedures, Diagnostic Procedures, Treatment of Heart Conditions.

21
Steps of the procedure
Gather Equipment: Collect the necessary supplies, including a catheter kit (which typically includes gloves, antiseptic solut ion,
lubricant, syringe, and the catheter itself), a sterile drape, and a receptacle for urine drainage.
Explain Procedure: Inform the patient about the catheterization procedure, its purpose, and obtain consent. Ensure privacy an d
maintain the patient's dignity.
Catheterization Procedure:
Prepare the Patient:
Position the patient comfortably on their back, with knees bent and legs apart. Use drapes to cover the patient, exposing onl y
the genital area.
Hand Hygiene and Gloving:
Perform hand hygiene thoroughly and put on sterile gloves to prevent contamination.
Preparation of Catheter and Lubrication:
Open the catheterization kit and prepare the catheter by applying a sterile lubricant to its tip. Lubrication helps ease the
insertion process.
Cleansing the Genital Area:
Cleanse the urinary meatus (urethral opening) and surrounding area with an antiseptic solution
Catheter Insertion:
Gently hold the catheter and insert it into the urethra, advancing it slowly and steadily.
Once urine starts to flow, continue insertion about 2-3 inches further into the bladder. If resistance is felt, pause and reassess
before proceeding to avoid injury.
Once the catheter is in place, secure it to the patient's leg or abdomen using tape or other securement devices to prevent
accidental removal or tension on the catheter.
Verification and Post-Procedure Care:
Ensure proper urine flow into the drainage bag.
Document the procedure details, including catheter size, date, time, amount of urine drained, patient response, and any
complications observed.
Provide Patient Instructions:
Educate the patient or caregivers on catheter care, hygiene practices, and recognizing signs of complications. Ensure they
understand how to manage the catheter properly.
