02 – Case Study - Part 1 (Modules 1 – 3)

Your supervisor has assigned you the task of preparing a simulation of a network your company has been
asked to prepare as part of a presentation. The presentation will be used to demonstrate the potential
customer how your company would design and implement the proposed network. You have been asked to
design this project in several segments that can ultimately be assembled into the full network topology.

Part 1 (Modules 1 – 3)
Step 1 – Build the network in the main wiring closet
 Use the Physical mode to setup the network closet (NET 1 Wiring Closet).
 Add a 2960 switch with IOS software version 15.0(2)SE4 in the rack.
 Add a PC to the network table.
 Access the Config tab on the PC and change the display name to NET PC1.
 Connect NET PC1 FastEthernet0 to the switch FastEthernet 0/1.

Step 2 – Configure the hardware

 Connect a console cable from the NET PC1’s RS232 port to the switch console port.
 From NET PC1, open the terminal emulator application and connect to the switch.
 Configure the switch with a basic configuration. You will need to configure basic security with
encrypted passwords and an appropriate banner message. Be sure to save your configuration on the
device.
o Switch name – NET_1_Sw1
o Console & VTY password = cisco
o Encrypted privileged password = class
o Manually encrypt all non-encrypted passwords
o Disable DNS lookups
o Banner = Authorized Access Only
 You have been given the IP address range 10.0.0.0/24 to address this portion of the network.
 Reserve the first available host IP address in the range for the router interface that will be installed
later.
 Assign the switch virtual interface (VLAN1) the second available host IP address and enable the
interface.
 A default gateway is not necessary at this point, but will need to be assigned later, after the router is
added to the network.
 Assign NET PC1 the 10th available host address.
 From NET PC1 command prompt on the, verify the connectivity to NET_1_Sw1.

Step 3 – Connect and configure workstations in Room 100

 Use the Back Level button in the top tool bar to exit the NET 1 wiring closet and access the
Corporate Offices.
 Connect the Ethernet port on each PC in Room 100 to NET_1_Sw1.
o PC1  f0/5
o PC2  f0/6
o PC3  f0/7
o PC4  f0/8
o PC5  f0/9
 Configure the PCs with an IP address and subnet mask (default gateway will be assigned later).
o PC1  15th available IP address in the given range
o PC2  16th available IP address in the given range
o PC3  17th available IP address in the given range
o PC4  18th available IP address in the given range
o PC5  19th available IP address in the given range
 Click on the NET 1 Wiring Closet and access NET_1_Sw1.
 Shutdown all unused ports on NET_1_Sw1.
 From NET PC1 in the NET 1 Wiring Closet, test connectivity to all other PCs (Should be successful -
troubleshoot if needed)

Step 4 – Additional information for presentation

 Create a document to provide documentation the physical network. Remember you will be adding to
this document throughout the case study, so consider how you want it to be laid out as the potential
customer will likely want to review the document.
o Location of network closet.
o Type of network equipment installed.
o Vendor, model, mode number, system serial number, IOS software version, software image
name, type and number of ports.
o Types of end devices installed.
o Identify the type of ports and their port number that are used to connect the network devices
to the end devices.
 Document the switch configuration (text copy).
 Document IP address range, addresses assigned, and devices and ports they are assigned to.
 Document all passwords and what they are associated with.
 Create a diagram of the current physical topology.
 Add a diagram of the OSI Model to your presentation and be prepared to discuss the significance of
each layer.
 Add a diagram of how application data is passed down the protocol stack on its way to be transmitted
across the media.
 Be sure to identify the Protocol Data Units (PDU) that is used in each step of the encapsulation process.

Step 5 – Presentation
 Present your completed project in a presentation format to your workgroup and demonstrate full
connectivity.
