ways

D - Mr. Lopez (38) Teacher (David S): Tyler and Sarah's science teacher, he is sick of his job. He is divorced. He acts
bored and annoyed during class. He wishes something exciting would happen. He is from LA, but moved to San Diego.
His favorite person was a teacher, his ex-wife. Now, he’s stuck in a low paying job and has to be frugal to get by.
F- Doctor/c 2 (35): when Joe was 8 years old his grandma was about to die of a heart attack and he called 911, the

*play begins with Tyler and Sarah each walking out of class and meeting up in the hallway*
Tyler
“Hola Sarah, what's up?”
Sarah
“Hola” *mispronounced*
Tyler
“Your spanish sucks, but how’s class going along”
Sarah
“Not bad, we’re just reading this book about the history of the french revolution, it's kinda boring not gonna lie”
Tyler
“Sounds like a great time”
Sarah
“Oh yeah, so much fun. What about your class?”
Tyler
“I'm not really sure, I smoked before class and fell asleep during Ms. Carol's non-stop talking.”
Sarah
“Again? I thought you said you were gonna try to stay sober this week?! This is becoming a serious issue Tyler”
Tyler
“Get off my back it's not like I'm addicted or anything, I just wanna clear my mind, you know?.”
Sarah
1
“In the nicest way possible, have you maybe considered going to therapy?”
Tyler
“Therapy doesn't make sense, how is speaking to a random person about all my problems going to solve anything?”
Sarah
“Because they are licensed professionals, their job is to help you. Trust me, my aunt was going through a similar situation
and therapy helped her a ton!”
Tyler
“No therapist is going to help, I need to be emancipated.”
Sarah
“Don't be dumb Tyler, why don't you just try to have a conversation with your parents?”
Tyler
“We're not talking about this right now, come to the bathroom with me, Angela’s waiting.”
Sarah
“Angela?! You're really gonna trust HER to sell you drugs? She seems sketchy”
Tyler
“I've known Angela since the 3rd grade, she's not the type of person to give out bad drugs.”
Sarah
“I really don't know Tyler, it just seems like a bad idea”
*Tyler and Sarah both arrive at the bathroom where Angela is waiting for them*
Angela
“quién es ella?
Translation: Whos she?
Tyler
“Ella es sólo mi amiga”
Translation: Shes just my friend
Tyler
“Tienes lo que necesito?”
Translation: “You got what i need?”
Angela
“Yeah depends on what you're looking for, I've got Xans, Percs, Opioids, you name it.”
Tyler
“How much for a few Percs?”
Angela
“Probably likeeeee 40 dollars.”
*Tyler shuffles through his wallet and pulls out exactly $35*
Tyler
“This is everything I have right now”
Angela
“This is only 35, you’re 5 bucks short.”
Tyler
“Can you just let it slide for today? I promise i'll give you an extra 5 next time”
2
Angela
“I want my money”
Sarah
“Don't worry i'll cover it”
*Sarah hands angela the money & turns to Tyler*
“you owe me 5 bucks”
Angela
“Here take these, they’re the best stuff out there”
Tyler
“Thanks, you're a lifesaver, seriously”
Angela
“Yea, I know”
*Angela bumps Sarah with her shoulder and walks away*
Tyler
“You wanna take one with me?”
Sarah
“You know i don't like doing that type of stuff Tyler, and i don't like you doing them either”
Tyler
“Whatever, come on, follow me.”
*Tyler walks into the gender neutral bathroom and Sarah follows*
Sarah
“Back to what I was saying, what's the big deal with you and your parents anyways?”
Tyler
“Do you have any idea how hard it is growing up in a household where you have to take care of your parents instead of
them caring for you?”
Sarah
“I know you had a really rough childhood, but what difference do you think it makes if you follow in their exact footsteps? I
mean look at you, you’re always getting high or drinking”
Tyler
“Why are you so concerned anyways, it's none of your business.”
Sarah
“Because one of these days you're gonna get hurt Tyler, you don't realize what you're doing to yourself.”
Tyler
“As I said before, it's really none of your business. Can we please talk about something else.”
Sarah
“I'm just trying to look out for you.”
Tyler
“I don't need you to look out for me all the time, I have these pills to take care of my problems.”
Sarah
“Those pills aren't doing anything except ruining your life.”
Tyler
“Listen, you're making a big deal out of it. Why can't you just be chill? It's my body and my choices.”
Sarah
“Because you're my best friend and I don’t want you to kill yourself? Why do you refuse to let me help you?”
3
Tyler
“Because I don't need your help, I'm perfectly fine with the way I live MY life.”
Sarah
“You’re a lost cause, this isn't who you are”
Tyler
“A lost cause, really? Who do you think you are? You don't get to come into my life and tell me what to do.”
Sarah
“What is wrong with you, you can't just throw aside all your problems and push them down with drugs.”
Tyler
“Get out of my face, you really think you're something special don't you? Well guess what, you aren't.”
*Tyler turns his back to Sarah and leaves without another word*
*Sarah finishes washing her hands and walks out of the bathroom where she finds Tyler lying on the ground passed out*
Sarah
“Tyler?”
*Sarah rushes to Tyler and shakes his limp body*
Sarah
“Oh my god! Somebody help! Please somebody get help”
*Mr. Lopez hears Sarah and runs into the hall to find Tyler*
Mr. Lopez
“¿Qué pasa aquí? *Sarah looks confused, she is still in shock.* What's happening here”
Sarah
“I don't know, i was in the bathroom and when I came out he was like this, he took a couple pills earlier, I think he's
overdosing, please help”
Mr. Lopez
“Okay, let's calm down. We have protocols for this. When did he take it?”
Sarah
“I don’t know, it hasn’t been that long. Just please help him, please!”
Mr Lopez
“Alright, here’s what we’re gonna do.
Mr. Lopez
“You, stay with him. I’m gonna go grab the Narcone.”
Sarah
“Narcan?”
Mr. Lopez
“Yeah that, I’ll be quick”
*Mr. Lopez leaves the scene and enters back in with Narcan, after returning, he reads the instructions*
*Mr Lopez delivers Narcan to Tyler, his breathing returns to normal, the Narcan works*
4
Mr. Lopez
(to 911 operator)
“Hello, my student has just had an overdose at school. I already delivered Narcan to the student and his breathing has
started to return to normal. I am unsure on what he may have taken. What is the next point of action?”
(We’ll send paremdics your way right now. What’s your location?)
Mr. Lopez
Sarah
“I’m not sure, I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and by the time I got back, he was on the floor!”
Mr. Lopez
“I don't know it couldn't have been more than five minutes ago”
Paramedic 1
“Everyone please take a step back, we need room to work here”
Paramedic 2
“Another kid really, second one this week and it's only wednesday”
Paramedic 1
“Check his vitals”
Paramedic 2
“He has a fast pulse and blood pressure is kinda low”
Paramedic 1
“It would be really helpful if you knew what he’d taken. *Paramedic turns to Mr. Lopez* Do you have any idea at all?”
Mr Lopez
“All I know is that It was a pill of some sort”
Sarah
“I think they were percocets? I don't know much about that type of stuff but I remember that word being thrown around.”
Paramedic 1
“I don't know if that helps much but thank you”
Mr. Lopez
“Wait, who sold him the drugs? You were there?”
Sarah
“Yeah it was…”
*Angela walks out into the hallway, hearing all the commotion. Sarah sees her.*
Sarah
“ANGELA! It was her, she sold him the pills!”
Mr. Lopez
“Angela, Is this true?”
Angela
“What!? No I would never”
5
Sarah
“Liar! You know what you did!”
Angela
“No I didn't?! what are you talking about!?”
Sarah
“Yes you did! You sold him those pills earlier, I was there!”
Mr Lopez
“Girls stop! Angela, did you really sell him those drugs?”
Angela
“What did I ever do to you Sarah?! why are you trying to get me in trouble, this is a serious thing!?”
Sarah
“What's wrong with you, can't you tell he obviously overdosed on whatever you gave him! You're a sociopath!”
Angela
“I didn't give him anything!”
Paramedic 2
“Stop arguing, you *points to sarah* let's go over here”
Paramedic 1
“And you, *points to angela* Over here.”
“Angela is it? Listen, I can’t promise that you won't get in trouble but if you did sell Tyler drugs we need to know what you
gave him. Whatever it was that he took was laced with something, and that's what caused him to overdose. It would really
help us if we knew where he got the drugs from.”
Angela
“You know what, *Angela hesitates to answer* Fine, yes, I sold him the drugs. But he's the one who bought them. It's not
my fault though I swear! I had no idea they were laced.”
Sarah
“See I told you!”
Angela
“Shut up! You act like I chose to do this, I have to, and of course Sarah the most perfect girl with the perfect little rich
family has something to say.”
Mr. Lopez
“Girls cut it out now, this isn't about the two of you, it's about Tyler. So would you please just hold your tongues.”
Paramedic 2
“Okay okay, we need to get him to a hospital. Angela if you don't mind we have some questions we need you to answer,
follow us outside will you?.”
*Scene fades out as angela and the paramedics walk out the door”
Iris
“This play is based on real life events, 11.2% of overdose deaths are aged 15-24 years old. We wanted to show you guys
why it's important to teach your kids about drug safety and Narcan”
David S
“By 12th grade 46.6% of kids have already used drugs. Instead of just saying drugs are bad explain why and give
resources on how to keep safe IF they do choose to use or are around others who do.”
Nathan
“Now we’re not saying support your kids using drugs but teaching them how to be safe and handle situations like this can
better prepare them. The more knowledge they have regarding substance abuse, the more they know about the
consequences of using.”
