 Past perfect

 Structure:

 Uses:

Past perfect is used to indicate that one action took place before another in past tense. The latter is
in Past Simple. Ex: The experts had announced their discovery.

 Time expressions:
When the Past Perfect Simple and the Past Simple appear in the same sentence, the following
time expressions and adverbs are usually used:
 Contrast between past perfect and past simple:

- The Past Perfect Simple is usually used in sentences together with another verb that is in Past
Simple. The action in Past Perfect Simple comes before the action in Past Simple. Ex: He went to
the cinema, but the film had already started.
-To explain why something happened in the past, we put the main verb of the sentence in Past
Simple and the subordinate clause introduced by because in Past Simple. Ex: I was tired because
I hadn't slept well.
