PLASTICS
Answer these questions in detail, in 3 lines

1.What are the characteristics of plastics?

Plastics are synthetic polymers with versatile properties including durability lightweight
resistance to chemicals and moldability

2.Depending on their origin, how can we classify them? Based on what they are
produced or obtained?

Plastics can be classified based on their origin as either synthetic or natural Synthetic plastics
are derived from petrochemicals while natural plastics like cellulose come from plant sources

3.The manufacturing process of plastics is called polymerization. Can you explain what
this process consists of?

Polymerization is the process of chemically bonding monomers to form polymer chains It

involves initiation propagation and termination steps creating long molecular chains
characteristic of plastics

4.Which elements can be added during plastics manufacturing processes? For what
purpose?

Various elements such as plasticizers stabilizers and colorants can be added during
manufacturing to enhance flexibility prevent degradation and provide color or other desired
properties

5.What is the main chacarcteristic of each type of plastic: thermoplastics, thermosets

and elastomers?

Thermoplastics can be melted and reshaped multiple times thermosets are rigid and
irreversible once set and elastomers exhibit rubber-like elasticity returning to their original
shape after deformation
