SKILL 2: DETAIL QUESTIONS

oMost common question type in TOEFL listening.

oQuestion asks you about the details from the

listening passage.

oNote-taking is crucial for this type of questions.

NOTE-TAKING IN THE TOEFL iBT
Ø TOEFL iBT is not a test of memory, but the listening passages
contain very dense information.

Ø People cannot remember everything from a lecture lasting 5-6 minutes.

Ø At the testing location, you will be given paper to use for taking notes. After the
test, you return the paper to the supervisor, but your notes will not be graded.

Ø Note-taking skills can be improved ONLY by practicing.

Ø Note-taking helps you focus.

SOME TIPS ON NOTE-TAKING
1. Do not write down everything you hear; for example, you can easily omit auxiliary
verbs (must/can/don’t), determiners (the, some, my, etc.), pronouns (he, their, its, etc.)
and prepositions (in, under, etc.);
2. Concentrate on important words, like nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, also
names, dates, numbers, etc.;
3. If you hear unfamiliar names or terms, check the visuals. It will save you from trying
so hard to understand the unknown terms.
4. Pay attention to the points that are repeated and that are emphasized with tone of
voice or with pauses.
