REACTION PAPER ABOUT POVERTY IN

THE PHILIPPINES

To understand this issue, we need to know first what poverty is. Poverty is the lack of basic
needs in life like food, water, clothing, and shelter. It is one of the problems of our society, our
country rather. According to cnnphilippines.com, March 2023 SWS poll showed that 51% of
Filipino families rated themselves poor, which was similar to its December 2022 survey.
People experience poverty because of many reasons and it leads to many things like lack of
education, unemployment and worse you can get sick.

I see poverty as a deadly issue that’s slowly killing our population. Well we all see that poverty
is very evident in the Philippines, mostly in Manila, where they were begging for alms that can
be seen from left and right and we, as the affected ones, need to take actions and make solutions
against it.

Upon analyzing this social issue, since I always see this issue in my social media accounts where
people tend to blame the government, well it's true that they have a big contribution to it.
As a matter of fact, aside from laziness, most Filipinos add to our problem by being drunkards,
lack of family planning, unemployment, tattletale and gamblers. Moreover, the progress of our
country starts from every individual and if we continue to idle and do nothing we cannot expect
that the Philippines will continue to move forward and make economic growth.

Additionally, judging this issue which is poverty that we are experiencing, some people also
need to change their mindset that “as long as me and my family is not affected I will not care, it
is the politician’s problem to solve and not mine” which is totally wrong because we are
indirectly affected and thus we should really care.

As a student of Lyceum of Alcala I will act on this issue by simply volunteering in

giving foods and drinks to people who cannot afford buying it just like what we always do before
christmas and every anniversary of our shop. I think I can also help in this issue by educating and
encouraging some of my friends and also other people to take action and to lessen the hunger
that they are experiencing. Lastly, I think I can also help in this simple action by studying hard
and then I will try to make organizations that can help for all those people who need it.

I therefore conclude that poverty remains a significant challenge in the Philippines, affecting
millions of individuals and families. Despite the country's recent economic growth and efforts to
reduce poverty rates, there are still persistent inequalities that hinder progress. By addressing
these challenges collaboratively, the Philippines can move towards a future where poverty is
significantly reduced, and all citizens have access to a decent standard of living and opportunities
for personal and economic growth. Poverty is not the problem of a person but of the whole
nation so let us think bigger and consider the benefit of our country as a whole, because this is
what our country needs.
