1. What is the importance of Dance in the field of arts? What about in society?

Dance is an art form that has been present at every stage of civilization; partaking in
its beauty is a way of connecting to humans past, present, and future. There is a long
tradition throughout the world of culture’s using dance to celebrate, to mourn, to tell
stories, and to educate. Also, with dance you are able to express emotions. Dance enable
you to tell a story without using your mouth. Through your choreography and your facial
expressions you are able to completely change yourself into another character.

Dance, like all forms of cultural expression, reflects the society in which it exists. Each
dance is unique and represents a specific culture. So in that way, the beauty of dance is that
it allows people to share their culture with others and be recognized for it. They are able to
provide many social and cultural improvements in the community and surrounding areas for
children, teenagers and adults. They expand social and cultural interaction, and provide an
overall community feeling of well-being and togetherness. Dance can have many purposes
including expression, communication, education, therapy, recreation, or entertainment and
may function in personal, political, social, religious, and spiritual environments.

2. What is the significance of Drama and Theater Arts in the field of arts and to its
audience?

There are positive influences from drama, theatre and the performing arts, especially
on young people. The benefits are physical, emotional, social, and they help to develop a
healthy appreciation of culture and the arts. Theatre helps us to see a different perspective
from our own. We’re shown humanity, psychology, motivations, conflict and resolution. We
as the audience get to witness the trajectory of persons other than ourselves. As artists, they
put themselves into emotional and intellectual situations that may never arise in our
personal lives. Theatre promotes us to give power to truth, to take risks and to advocate for
new and diverse voices. It helps to promote social discourse, dialogue and potential social
change. Theatre is a cultural phenomenon that demands the society to examines itself in the
mirror. We can study societal problems and attempt to find solutions. Coming together as a
community to listen to opposing points of view is necessary. Lastly, it helps us in
appreciating arts and culture.

3. What is the relevance of Literature in creating art? What is its significance to the
society?

Art and Literature are bound together in several ways. Great works of art have
inspired great works of literature, great works of literature have inspired art, and together
art and literature have simultaneously represented similar movements. Art and literature
can be seen weaving around each other, influencing one and another, and being used as a
tool to teach students about liberal arts and humanity.

Literature provides a window into the past, allowing readers to see how their
ancestors and others dealt with day-to-day life. Readers can see where their own people
came from, and how the country they live in became what it is today. Literature can also let
its readers look back at the mistakes made by their predecessors, and hopefully avoid those
same mistakes. Modern literature gives readers a view into present-day politics, and
sometimes gives us an important view into the lives of the people around us. Fictional
literature can also give its readers special insight into the minds of writers to see how they
envision the future might turn out, including both the good and the bad. Literature also
helps readers to understand the human condition, and what makes them who they are,
whether talking about love, war or other important themes throughout life.

LEARNING EXERCISE 6.3

DISTINCTIONS: Point out the difference of each pair of terms from the other. Give direct
but substantial answers. Cite some examples.

1. Ethnic Dance vs. Folk Dance

Ethnic Dance is a type of dance which is native to a specific race or ethnic group. Tribal
or ethnic dance is considered intimately related to the everyday life of the community. The
term ethnic is used for religious dances, dances that are designed as hymns of praise to a
god or to bring on good fortune in peace or war. While Folk Dance is associated with ethnic
traditions and cultures of different societies in which certain melodies, rhythms, costumes,
and folk symbolisms are preserved. Folk dances have cultural significance and inherent
beaut. By means of folk dances, we can learn a great deal about the culture of a people their
beliefs, interests, desires, and habits. Through our own folk dances, we can discover a lot
more about our own heritage. Folk dancing is also a form of social dancing that has become
part of the customs and traditions of people.

2. Drama as a Script vs. Drama as a Play

The drama as a script is a dialogue read by the persons representing the characters. The
drama as a play is a script coming to life, involving the director's interpretation of the script
and the performances/portrayals by the characters. Theater art is also known as drama as a
play. Theater is an art concerned almostexclusively with live performances in which the
action is precisely planned to create a coherent and significant sense of drama.

The most significant difference between these two entities is that drama as a script
refers to a form of written literature that is intended for performance while the drama as a
play refers to a theatrical performance. In simple words, a drama as a script is to be read
and drama as a play is to be seen. However, different people might give different
interpretations to what they read. This is to say, in a script, we only read the dialogues and
stage directions; we often imagine the performance in our minds. But in a play, the audience
get to see the story enacted. Here we do not have to imagine the emotions of the
characters, sound and light effects or background settings. In addition, the play might
present a different interpretation from what we understood from reading the drama. This
difference could be even made from a subtlest change of tone, mood or gesture. It can be
said that a play gives artists’ interpretation of the drama.

3. The Playwright vs. The Director

The playwright works out his plot in terms of actual actions and dialogue to be
performed and spoken by actors within the limited facilities of the stage. The product of his
creativity is called a play. It presents an order of situations in which the characters express
themselves through what happens to them, what they are supposed to do, or even the
things they play to do. As playwright, one is free to combine modes, to criticize the situation,
to reform the characters, to exaggerate the lines, to fly into undiscovered realms of the
unreal and the imaginary, or even to throw up in his hands resignation of his subject. The
playwright gains fulfilment when his drama is staged. Meanwhile the function of the director
is to present a play which he has interpreted and translated into dramatic action, with
complete devices as setting, sound, among others, in terms of the emotional and intellectual
concept of the playwright. The interpretation must be clear, interesting, and enjoyable
because the success or failure of the production is laid on the director's hand. Moreover as
director, it is not only aesthetic and technical knowledge are demanded for, but also
managerial. He stands as the leader of the theater ensemble which should work
harmoniously to put the production. In this respect, the director can be assisted by the stage
manager who serves as the alter-ego and assumes responsibility whenever the director is
not suitable. As stage manager, one is supposed to be knowledgeable about the play, and
must have grouped fully the concept of the director.

4. Essay vs. Short Story

The short story is written with the incident and it revolves around the different types of
the characters. The impact of the story creates the interest to the reader to read the story.
In a short story, there will be character and actions or events. The essay is the art of writing
information in a particular format. The structure of the essay is simple and it is subject
oriented writing. The opinion of the writer is presented along with the factual information.

The short story is short in length and essay writing is long in length. The short story is
narrative whereas the essay writing is descriptive. The plot, action, and characters are some
of the differences between essay and short story. An essay does not have a plot; a short
story has a plot. In the essay, the flow of information are wisely present but there is action in
the various behavior of the character in the short story. In the essay, there are no characters
whereas in a short story there is a number of characters revolve around the main character.

The point of view of the story is very important and it helps the reader to travel into the
thoughts of the writer. Generally, short stories need flashback or flash forward to make it
interesting to the readers. The first line and the last line are very important lines to catch the
attention of the readers. The story is roughly composed of exposition, conflict, rising action,
climax, and denouement. The emotions and the expressions convey the meaning to the
readers.

Essay structure is the set of ideas and arguments regarding a topic. The introduction,
body and the conclusion are the three parts of the essay. The introduction paragraph is an
attention-grabbing idea, a statement which is practical, and a preview you discuss in the
body paragraphs. The body paragraph opens the subject, support the details, an explanation
with examples from the real world. When coming to the conclusion the reverse hook and
restatement is given, rephrase the main topic, and call to action or global statement are
mentioned.

5. Prose vs. Poetry

Prose and poetry are the two common forms of literature; wherein prose is written work,
which contains sentences and paragraphs, and does not have any metrical structure. As
against, poetry is a genre of literature which is based on a particular form, that creates a
rhyme. Prose is a straight forward form of literature, wherein the author expresses his
thoughts and feelings in a lucid way. Poetry is that form of literature in which the poet uses a
unique style and rhythm, to express intense experience. The basic difference between prose
and poetry is that we have sentences and paragraphs, whereas lines and stanzas can be
found in a poetry. Further, there is regular writing in prose, but there is a unique style of
writing a poetry.
