Assembly of Engine Frame and Sole Plate for PS-26 Engines

DSE9202

The assembly of the engine frame and

sole plate is a long and delicate job in
order to ensure a leakproof and tight
engine body with acceptable clearances
at the main thrust and bearing points.

Assembly process

Loosen up all tie bolts -1-.

Loosen up all jack bolts of main

bearings -2-.

Check all main bearing caps -3-

for the following:

- Is the direction of the bearing caps -3- in line with the punch marks on the engine
bed -8- ?

- Are all caps installed on the right cylinder ?

Check that all holding down bolts -4- are sufficiently tightened.

Loosen up all the bolts -5- on the engine frame -9- apron side.

Check the clearances between engine frame -9- and sole plate -8-. Some clearance at this
point is acceptable.

Tighten the bolts -5- on the engine frame -9- apron side, after you have fitted the dowel
pins.

Make sure that front and rear parts of the engine are in line with each other by examining
the marks on the joining parts.
Tighten all tie bolts -1- in sequence, in two steps.

First step: Tighten all bolts -10- in sequence to about 35-40 kgm.

Second step: Tighten all bolts -10- in the same sequence as before to 75-90 kgm.
Repeat tightening of second step once more to ensure an even tension.

Tightening sequence:

6 cylinder engine

8 cylinder engine

Note: In order not to damage the O-ring -6- at the bottom side of the tie
bolt -1-, the tie bolt nut -10- must be tightened in such a way so as NOT
to rotate the tie bolt -1- or else the O-ring -6- will be damaged and result
in oil leakage.

Therefore, in the first step use an open end spanner to tighten bolt to
about 35 to 45 kgm. Once you have confirmed NO ROTATION of the tie
bolt -1- then proceed to the second step using a torque wrench set to 75-
90 kgm.

Check the clearance between the engine frame -9- and sole plate -8-. There should be no
clearance unless something was caught in between, or either of the components are
deformed for some reason.
Install the jack bolts -2- and tighten up all main bearing caps -3- (do NOT install main
bearings -7-).

Note: All jack bolts -2- must be checked with a filler gauge, that they are
properly installed and no gap exists between bolt head and main bearing
cap seat flange. Unless the bolt is properly installed it will NOT secure the
main bearing cap even if the bolt is tightened with the highest torque.

Take readings of the main bearing bore (without main bearings -7- installed) sing a dial bore
gauge to obtain accurate readings.

Check for ovality and deformation of main

bearing pockets.

Loosen up main bearing jack bolts -2- and remove caps -3-. Install main bearings -7- and
caps -3- , and retighten jack bolts -2-.

Measure main bearing bore (inner diameter) with the dial bore gauge as previously (Dbore).

Measure crank shaft main journal diameter (Dcrank).

Calculate oil clearance for each main bearing.

Main bearing clearance = Dbore - Dcrank

The standard oil clearance is between 0.11 mm and 0.19 mm.

0.11 mm < Main bearing clearance < 0.19 mm
