Wastewater Treatment Systems (ENH 324) – Winter 2024

School of Occupational and Public Health
Toronto Metropolitan University
Introduction [Heading 1: font type/size is Caliber 14. This section should be limited to max 2 pages
and max 1 image]

In this section, general information about the history and development of wastewater
treatment and wastewater systems in Canada can be provided. Information about the
Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant (known as ABTP), its history, capacity, recent developments,
number of staff, budgets, expenditure, number of households it serves, etc. can be provided.
General information about the involved treatment methods (e.g., primary, secondary, tertiary)
as well as types of secondary treatment techniques (e.g., is it activated sludge or trickling filter)
is provided in this section. [Do Not change the template’s font type/size as well as
line/paragraph spacing throughout the report]. Information about influent/effluent BOD, TSS,
etc. may be provided in this section or in the following sections.
This section can be flourished with one image (e.g., Google map of the facility). The height of
the image should not exceed 8 cm (see the one below). It should not be too small either. Each
image should be referenced in the text and also have a descriptive caption. Make sure to put
one line space before and two lines space after each image.

Figure 1. Description of the image. If not using one of your images, make sure the image is not copyright
protected or properly referenced otherwise. In case of using your own image, cite it as [the authors].

Primary Treatment [Heading 1. Limit the section to max. 2 pages and max. 3 images]
You may decide to split this section into two subsections – preliminary treatment and primary
treatment – or cover both in just one section. This section should include a description of
preliminary and primary treatment techniques and equipment used at ABTP, and include images
taken by the group members during the visit.
Provide as much detail as possible about the type, dimension, and purpose of each
technique/equipment. Such information can be provided by the tour coordinator (facility
management) or gathered from the internet. In the latter case, the references should properly
be cited in the report and also presented in a Reference section following an APA format.

Preliminary treatment [Heading 2: the font type/size for the title of subsections is Caliber 12]
In case of subsections, provide proper titles following the abovementioned font type/size.

Primary treatment [Heading 2]

Secondary Treatment [Heading 1. Limit the section to a max. 2 pages; max. 3 images]
You may decide to split this section into two subsections – biological reactor and secondary
clarifiers – or cover both in just one section. This section should include a description of
techniques and equipment used at ABTP, and include images taken by the group members
during the visit. Provide as much detail as possible about the type, dimension, and purpose of
each technique/equipment. Such information can be provided by the tour coordinator (facility
management) or gathered from the internet. In the latter case, the references should properly
be cited in the report and also presented in a Reference section following an APA format.

Tertiary Treatment [Heading 1. Limit the section to a max. 2 pages; max. 2 images]
This section should include a description of techniques and equipment used at ABTP for tertiary
treatment, and include images taken by the group members during the visit. Provide as much
detail as possible about the type, dimension, and purpose of each technique/equipment. Such
information can be provided by the tour coordinator (facility management) or gathered from
the internet. In the latter case, the references should properly be cited in the report and also
presented in a Reference section following an APA format.
Depending on different types of treatment applied in tertiary treatment (e.g., removal of
nutrients, further clarification, etc.), you may decide to split this section into more subsections.
In that case, each subsection should be properly titled.

Advanced Treatment (if applicable) [Heading 1. Limit the section to a max. 1 page; max. 1
image]

In case advanced treatment is carried out at the plant (e.g., for water reuse purposes), it should be
explained in this section.
References (APA format) [Heading 1]
The references should follow the APA format. See the link below for APA citation guidelines.
