Performance Assessment: Sickle-Cell Trait (SCT) Infographic

Instructions:
1. Read the following articles :
a. Athletes with Sickle Cell Trait Article (pdf)
b. Sickle Cell Experimental Therapy (pdf), or Sickle Cell Experimental Therapy (original news
article)

2. Using information in these resources and what you’ve learned in this unit to create an
infographic that explains why inheriting an abnormal hemoglobin gene will cause an individual with SCT
to struggle with maintaining homeostasis during exercise and discuss the possible use of stem cells in
the treatment of the disease. Use google draw, or something you are familiar with, to make your
infographic.
a. You might recall that we did an activity titled “How do you transcribe and translate a gene?”
where we compared normal hemoglobin with the HbS (sickle cell) hemoglobin sequences. Look
for it in your google drive.

3. Include the following information on your infographic:


a. The change in the structure of DNA
b. The change in the structure of the protein
c. The change in the cell
d. The change in the function of the body system
e. How these changes affect homeostasis in the related body systems (circulatory, respiratory,
muscular)
f. How this condition can be treated using stem cells (and the role mitosis plays)
g. Include 2 or more relevant pictures (with captions)

4. Include a separate Reference List (in APA format) on a google doc that lists the references used
to complete the infographic. Use APA format. Include the references for both articles.
(www.citethisforme.com, Citation Machine, or use google doc “tools-explore”).

5. Save both the Infographic and the Reference List as pdf files. Turn in both to Canvas at the same
time. Remember: This counts as an assessment!
