WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE SYSTEMS HOMEWORK #2

a) Calculate the optimum flow rate and drawdown.

Optimum flow rate: The flow rate where the dupuit and allowed flow rate are equal to each other is
called optimum flow rate.

Hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer k = 0.00134 m/s. 70 cm = 0.7 m .(diameter of well)

Hydraulic conductivity (K) = k * (diameter of well)^2 / 4

K = 0.00134 * (0.7)^2 / 4 = 0.000205 m/s

Optimum flow rate

Qopt = 0.25 * K * π * (diameter of well)^2

Qopt = 0.25 * 0.000205 * π * (0.7)^2 = 0.039 L/s

The drawdown

s = Q / (2 * π * K * h)
Q = 126 L/s, h = 16 m
s = Qopt / (2 * π * K * h) = 0.039 / (2 * π * 0.000205 * 16) = 0.0006 m

The optimum flow rate is 0.039 L/s and the optimum drawdown is 0.0006 m.

b) Find the number of wells that will meet the required flow rate.

Number of wells = (Qrequired / Qopt) + 1

Qrequired = 126 L/s and Qopt = 0.039 L/s
Number of wells = (126 / 0.039) + 1 = 3231
