User and Stakeholders
• Who cares most about the product being developed
• They play critical role in gathering requirements
User
An individual or group that interacts with the system or benefits from a
system during its utilization. (ISO 15288-2015)
Stakeholders
An individual or an organization having a right, share, claim or interest
in a system.

Users are stakeholders but not all stakeholders are users

User and Stakeholders
• The systems engineer will engage with users & stakeholders in the life
of a system

• Essential design features and needs originate with users &

stakeholders

• They can be approached for continuous feedback during the

development phase of the product

• They can help improve the product/system further

INCOSE: SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to
enable the realization of successful systems.
It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle,
documenting requirements, and then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while
considering the complete problem consisting of operations, cost and schedule, performance, training and
support, test, manufacturing, and disposal. Systems engineering considers both the business and the
technical needs of all customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs.

• Interdisciplinary: Involves many disciplines (Design, manufacturing, marketing, finance, …. )

• Approach: Tried and true tools, techniques and procedures
• Customer needs: Keeps focused on it throughout the life cycle of system or product
• Most important during the early stages of development, but persists across the lifecycle 13
DoD: SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
Systems engineering is a methodical and disciplined approach for the
specification, design, development, realization, technical management,
operations, and retirement of a system.
SE applies critical thinking to the acquisition of a capability. It is a holistic, integrative discipline whereby
the contributions from across engineering disciplines, structural engineers, electrical, mechanical,
software, safety, human factors, reliability, are evaluated and balanced to produce a coherent capability
called the system.

Capability-based: SE avoids the solution until capabilities and functions, i.e., requirements have
been fully defined.

NASA: SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

Systems engineering is a methodical, multidisciplinary approach, for

design, realization, technical management, operations, and retirement of a
system.
