2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MEEKS OF MALABA, herein referred to as (MOM) registered this 2023, is a youth-led
organization based in Malaba town, Teso North Sub-County, Busia County. It is dedicated in
informing, imparting and empowering the Malaba, Teso North and Busia County Youths at
large to be agents of change in their communities.

MOM’s objectives doesn’t only give voice to youths, it provides communities with insights
into their unique and universal challenges. Tackling issues like decision making, leadership,
talent development, unemployment/entrepreneurship, crime, gender inequality. MOM
bravely fights the societal and political norms that oppress and limit unity and peaceful
coexistence.

In the same regard, the MEEKS OF MALABA youth group is organizing an event dubbed
‘’THE MALABA FESTIVAL.’’

The Malaba festival is a vibrant celebration of our community’s rich culture, diversity and
talent. This event promises to bring together people of all ages for a day of information,
music, art, food and entertainment, creating lasting memories and fostering community
spirit.

Name: LIL KIM OCHIENG

Designation: CHAIRPERSON

Here is another multi-talented young man with unmatched skills in various arts and income
generating activities. His selflessness in helping and mentoring fellow youths is admirable.
While undergoing secondary education, Lil Kim was a super endowed footballer who got
selected to go and join a football academy in Europe but due to challenges in logistics, he did
not make it- hence his main reason of fighting to bring a change to the community of Malaba
and make people’s dreams be realized.

Currently, he is working as a clearing and forwarding agent and at the same time has his own
branding business under the name Lil’s empire. He does graphics design, videography,
photography and event planning in this venture. He is also a trainer in dancing and acting.

Sarah plays a great role in this group. Apart from managing financial matters, she
represents all the ladies in the assembly and her guiding and counseling skills are also
commendable.

Creativity delineates Meshack, apart from his proficiency and unique articulation of ideologies
and willpower.

Meshack joined Supabit Company limited as a sales person in 2013 before being promoted to a
sales executive the same year. He then came back to Malaba town in 2015 and started his
enterprise Gied Suppliers. In the same year he got employed at Emuria Fm as a Deejay and
naturally became a presenter too. He also worked in production at the same studio until on
December 2017 when he decided to work on a part time basis at the radio so as to concentrate
on his enterprise.
Formerly (early 2017), he established Wateule Family, a group of talented Gospel music artist,
dancers and actors, which to date boasts of having organized many local events in the larger
Teso than any other group. He then created his graphic design brand XDI which is evident on
many print materials in this region.

Early this year, he has co-founded GIED exam series in group effort with multiple educators.
4. INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM
STATEMENT
Current statistics outline that the unemployment rate in Kenya is forecast to 5.41% in 2023.
The unemployed people in Kenya-whose majority are youths-is forecast to 2.24m in 2023.

Even with this depressing report in mind, the reality in Busia County is even worse, with
increase in cases of crime, drug abuse, STI’s, early pregnancies among other discouraging
factors due to lack of opportunities and awareness in our communities.

This has led to the poverty index level of Busia County to rise drastically from 70 percent in
2022 to 83 percent according to the latest survey as revealed by the area Governor Paul
Nyongesa Otwoma during his inaugural address to the 3rd County Assembly.

Addressing this issues needs co-operation of the whole society whereby there must be a
unifying link that can act as a conduit for information diffusion and cultural interchange.
Unluckily in Malaba town and the Teso North at large, we don’t have a media house like a
radio or Television station or even guaranteed events to aid in this.

As a solution, the Meeks of Malaba contemplate it’s time the community comes together
to foster a new dawn for all and this will be achieved through Malaba Festival, which will be
just but a beginning of other various plans to ensure the fruition of this resolve.
5. PROJECT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
a) Cultural celebration and preservation – preserve and showcase traditional practices,
arts, and customs that define the identity of the Malaba community.

b) Empowerment through education – Provide educational opportunities and insights

to empower the youth of Malaba, Teso North, and Busia County.

c) Information dissemination - Serve as a conduit for the diffusion of vital information

within the community. Also address the information gap by providing a platform for
discussions on key issues affecting Malaba, Teso North, and Busia County.

d) Catalyze positive change - Encourage proactive participation in community

development, challenging the status quo for a more inclusive and equitable society.

down barriers and promoting social cohesion.
f) Establish a foundation for future initiatives - Lay the groundwork for future
initiatives that go beyond the festival, addressing the root causes of challenges
faced by the community.

development efforts.
In essence, the Malaba Festival aims to go beyond a one-day celebration, becoming a

Busia County communities.
