Outlining is a big part of the illumination practice,

and it can be done with black Indian ink or brown
walnut ink. The key here is to have a good brush
with a long tip to allow you to move the ink on the
page.

Certain types of inks are not very flowing, so there

will be a period of trial and error. The surface you
use, which is mostly watercolour paper, can impact
your inked lines and choosing the smoothest paper
will improve your outlining.

● One.
Take an A4 paper and fill half of it with straight lines and
make sure the lines are consistent in thickness.

● Two.
Use the other half of the A4 paper to draw lines that
include two thicknesses. Either from thin line to thick
line or the opposite.

● Three.
Take another A4 paper and fill the first half with spirals,
the letter S and letter C. Please use the same direction
for all the shapes.

● Four.
Continue with the same paper and the same shapes but
try them in the opposite directions.

● Five.
Take a tracing paper and put it on top of the curved
shapes in the next page and trace using your paint
brush and ink.

These shapes come from a book called Iranian Garden and it is designed by Hosain Nikbin (2004-2010).
