Ukkil / Okir

Art Activity
Create your own version of ukkil – okir design.
Art Activity
First, review what is okir and ukkil in our previous lessons.
Art Activity
Prepare the following materials:
1. Oslo Paper or bond paper
2. Pencil
3. Coloring materials
4. Other art materials
Fold your paper to
form a quadrant
(four squares)
or draw a horizontal
and vertical lines
across the page.
Make sure you can
still erase these lines
later. These will only
serve as your guide
for now.
Or, if you can, you
can fold the paper
multiple times to
create several guide
lines. Look at the
example on the next
page.
Create more crease on the paper that will serve as your guide later.
Fold the paper into multiple triangles to achieve this.
You can also fold it horizontally and vertically. More guide lines or creases help
achieve balance and symmetry.
The next page will show you the basic elements of
okir and ukkil design…
Combining these elements can create a design and
pattern inspired from nature.

Be mindful, though, that dog and pig designs are

Choose one side to start with.
Choose an okir/ukkil element.
Start at the center with one element.
Add more elements as you go outwards,
slowly forming the pattern you have imagined.
The next page will show you the process...
Here, the plan is to create a fish motif. Use pencil to sketch the elements. Start with a potyok either from the center to
outwards or from outside to the center, followed by dahun kambantuli, dahun andalan, dahun suwa, dahun angilan and dahun
pakupaku.
Repeat this as a mirror image on the other sides…
Use ballpen or color pencil to darken the outline. Apply the desired color.
Take a photo of your artwork and upload it
in our assignment tab.
