TITLE: PSYCHO-SOCIAL WELLBEING OF THE CHILDREN OF SINGLE

PARENTS AMONG THE THADOU-KUKI IN KANGPOKPI DISTRICT, MANIPUR


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Psychological impact and social problems of children, due to lack of proper assistance and
hindrances approaches through single parenting and orphanage.
ELABORATION OF THE PROBLEM
In the Garden of Eden, God has instituted the marriage where Adam and Eve became the first
parents. Bible declared how the first man and woman came into existence and how they lived
together in the Garden of Eden at first where there is no sin, no sorrow, and no separation. 1
But, because of the fall, sin enters into the world through Adam and Eve. The world became
corrupted and human beings became depraved and lost the relationship with God. So, the
consequence of sin is the death of all human being. 2 The sinfulness of Adam and Eve caused
a separation from God and even today humanity is experiencing the sinful nature. People
experience lots of death, divorce, killing, suicide, separation, etc., are happening due to the
sinful nature of humanity. In today’s world, people are facing several kinds of issues even in
family several issues arises one after another which also caused and effect the society. The
researcher will deal with the problems faced by the children of single parents. Due to single
parenting children are facing several problems physically and psychologically which makes
them to neglect their own responsibility. Sometimes single parenting faced several issues
because stress and lack of the support of the partner, which even discourage their own
children and they are bound by that very issues. Some of the problems which lead to single
parenting is that because of the divorce and it is considered one of the most common ongoing
issues in the family, church and the world and due to this reason the children are faced with
lots of difficulties in every field. In other cases of single parenting maybe an accidents,
sickness, firings, and killings, one of the parents lost their life. There is also an unfortunate
parent who died by delivering a baby. So, these are some of the causes of single parents left
with a full burden on their heads. As the parent faced many difficulties and challenges, their
children are also facing the same problems and difficulties in one way or another. The
researcher is going to attempt and will point out some of the psychological problems and
social problems in the life of the children of single parents.
IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
The writer wants to do research on psychological impact of children and letting the people to
understand the issues happening around them. There are many children with a single parent
either with mother or father. Especially, adolescent goes through many hard times and
sometimes feeling difficult to involve in society. They feel insecure, feel rejection from
others, and they want to isolate from the public. When they compared themselves with the
children who have both parents, they lost their self-confidence from doing something. They
think that they are helpless and useless. Academically they sometimes feel that they will not
be able to complete even their course. They think that they have less sponsor or to support
them in their studies. Many children undergo different types of problems but here the

researcher is going to focus on the children of single parents who are faced with psycho-
social problems in their lives. So, this study will be helpful for the parents, teachers, and
leaders to help someone in need especially the adolescents of single parents who are facing
with their psychological and social problems.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The study will be based on sources from the library of Manipur Theological College, internet
and empirical research; both primary and secondary source will be used, collection of data
with the help of personal interview with the people related to the subject matter.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To investigate the psycho-social problem faced by the children of single parents among the
Thadou-Kuki community in kangpokpi district, Manipur.
2. To make suggestions to the Christian counsellors on the importance of counselling the
children of single parents in the community.
3. To suggest those single parent to build a genuine relationship with their children and
understanding of their feelings.
4. To make the Church and societies to be aware of the conditions of the children of single
parents in their community.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of the study is to find out the problems of those psychologically and socially
affected children of single parents among the Thadou-Kuki community in Kangpokpi district,
Manipur. This study will be greatly helpful to the affected children to let them know their
worth in society. And this study will also be a great help for the counsellors and leaders of the
church towards the problem of children with a single parent to be more sensitive in their
needs.
HYPOTHESIS
1. There is no significant level of depression found among the children of single parents in
Thadou-Kuki community in kangpokpi district, Manipur.
2. There is no significant level of low self-esteem found among the children of single parents
in Thadou-Kuki community in kangpokpi district, Manipur.
3. There is no significant level of social rejection found among the children of single parents
in Thadou-Kuki community in kangpokpi district, Manipur.
4. There is no significant level of differences found between male and female children
concerning psycho-social problems.
LIMITATIONS
The researcher is limiting only 50 adolescents selected randomly in this study. And this study
was focused within Thadou-Kuki community of Kangpokpi district, Manipur. Particularly to
the adolescents of single parents who are going through psycho-social problems.
TENTATIVE OUTLINE
In chapter 1, the researcher deals with the general introduction of the research on the psycho-
social problem faced by the children of single parents, which includes the statement of the
problem, elaboration of the problem, significance of the problem, objectives of the study,
scope of the study, hypothesis, limitations, definitions of the terms, methods of the study,
sources of the study, and framework of the study.
In chapter 2, the researcher is dealing with the overview of the research which includes
understanding of the single parent family, the causes of single parent, the biblical perspective
of single parent family, the conditions of children in single parent family, identifying the
adolescents of single parents, the challenges faced by the adolescents of single parent family,
family relationships during adolescent, psychological problems on children of single parents,
social problems on children of single parents, and conclusion of the chapter.
In chapter 3, the researcher is dealing with analysis and interpretations of the data. The
procedures of the data collection, analysis of the gender, analysis of the feeling of depression,
analysis of the feeling of low self-esteem, analysis of thefeeling of social rejection, the
comparison of data’s between male and females are presented accordingly.
The final 4, chapter of the research attempted the major findings from the data analyses that
have collected from the respondents and from there the hypothesis was made.
