Hoe studeer je het Poverty Requiem in?
Wat is het Poverty Requiem?
Het Poverty Requiem is een muziekstuk gecomponeerd in het idioom
van wereldmuziek voor een koor van een ongelimiteerd aantal
zangers en zangeressen, twee solisten, een aantal percussionisten en
dansers. Het is bedoeld om mensen hun stem te laten verheffen tegen
de armoede in de wereld.
Het werk bestaat uit vijf delen. Daarin worden de verschillende
manieren waarop armoede zijn uitwerking heeft op de mens
verklankt: het lijden, de woede, de rouw, de humor en de hoop.
In het Requiem wordt het uitgangspunt van democratisch muziek
maken gehanteerd. Iedereen kan meedoen. De deelnemers bereiden
zich voor met behulp van auditieve en visuele voorbeelden en instruc-
ties die op de website www.povertyrequiem.org zijn gepubliceerd of
via mail of via telefoon kunnen worden besteld. Het beheersen van
het notenschrift is niet noodzakelijk.
Tijdens een workshop voorafgaande aan een uitvoering, komen de
zangers, percussionisten en solisten bij elkaar en wordt het stuk inge-
studeerd. Wanneer alle zangers zich thuis goed hebben voorbereid,
is één workshop voldoende.
Wat kun je oefenen?
Het Poverty Requiem is geschreven voor vier koren:
o kinderkoor (Youth Coir = YC);
o koor van ongeoefende zanger (Scratch Choir = SC);
o koor van zangers met koorervaring (Practiced Choir= PC);
o mannenkoor van zangers met koorervaring (Male Choir = MC).
Er is geen indeling in stemsoorten (sopraan, alt, tenor, bas). Het
Scratch Choir en het Practiced Choir zijn meerstemmig geschreven,
mannen én vrouwen zingen samen de meerstemmige partijen.
De partijen van het Poverty Requiem zijn eenvoudig. Ze zijn opge-
bouwd uit kleine ritmische zinnetjes per stem. Iedereen kan ze zingen.
Met behulp van de geluidsvoorbeelden, dit tekstboekje en eventueel
de partituren kun je het Poverty Requiem heel goed thuis oefenen.

Oefen alle partijen. Je zult merken dat dit vanzelf gaat. Aan alle meisjes
en vrouwen het verzoek om de partijen van het Youth Choir, het
Scratch Choir en het Practiced Choir te oefenen. Aan alle jongens en
mannen het verzoek de partijen van het Scratch Choir , het Practiced
Choir en het Male Choir te oefenen. Tijdens de workshop en uitvoering
word je ingedeeld per partij en per stem.
Hoe kun je oefenen?
Luister eerst geconcentreerd naar het hele Poverty Requiem. Pak de
tekst, zet een koptelefoon op je hoofd of ga voor je speakers zitten,
luister en lees. Laat je voor dat half uur door niets of niemand storen.
Doe dat minstens drie keer. Je hebt dan een beeld hoe alle delen in
elkaar zitten en hoe de partijen van de koren en de solisten in elkaar
grijpen.
Je zult ook merken dat je na drie keer luisteren de meeste partijen van
het Scratch Choir, van het Youth Coir en van het Male Choir al mee kan
zingen. Doe dat ook. Uit volle borst!
Oefen dan per deel. Merk op dat elk deel is opgebouwd uit kleine
ritmische zinnen per koor. Soms zijn Scratch Choir en Practiced Choir
meerstemmig. Na een paar keer luisteren en nazingen kun je de melo-
dietjes en ritmes van elke stem per koor gemakkelijk zingen, gebruik
als leidraad de klinkende muziek met behulp van dit tekstboekje en
alleen als steun de partituur. Met de nummers in het tekstboekje kun
je de betreffende passages in de partituur terugvinden.
Om de melodietjes per stem precies te kunnen onderscheiden
hebben we van de meerstemmige partijen afzonderlijke opnames
gemaakt. Door voor en na zingen leer je elke partij en elke stem
kennen. Hoe vaker je dit doet hoe meer je kunt voelen waar armoede
over gaat en hoe het op te lossen is.
Nogmaals: het is dus de bedoeling dat je alle partijen van de koren
instudeert. Er is in het Practiced Choir en het Sratch Choir geen
indeling in aparte vrouwen en mannen stemmen. Elke stem wordt
gezongen door vrouwen én door mannen.
Je kunt er een spel van maken en zelf checken hoe goed je het
Poverty Requiem kent. Pak het tekstboekje. Je ziet per koor de
verschillende blokjes. Zing elk blokje. Controleer vervolgens met de
partituur en de geluidsvoorbeelden, vooral of je het ritme van de tekst
te pakken hebt en of je de verschillende melodieën kan zingen.
Een andere manier van oefenen (ook goed om je auditieve geheugen
en ritmegevoel te testen) is de verschillende delen elke keer weer af te
spelen en de verschillende stemmen mee te zingen. Of door het hele
Poverty Requiem te spelen en per keer te besluiten welke stem je van
begin tot einde mee zult zingen.
En wat je natuurlijk vooral kunt doen: DIT DELEN!
Vertel tenminste vijf mensen in je omgeving hoe zij hun stem kunnen
verheffen tegen de armoede in de wereld. Met het Poverty Requiem.

Aan de slag!
Met dit tekstboek in de hand en de oefen cd in de speler kun je dus
aan de slag. Op de volgende pagina staat de trackaanduiding van de
oefen cd. Begin gewoon lekker bij het begin. Luister zoals gezegd eerst
een aantal keer naar het geheel van de vijf delen (track 1 t/m 5). Luister
daarna naar de verschillende stukjes per stem van de afzonderlijke
delen. De aanduiding is eenvoudig: na de naam van het deel volgt het
nummer van het stukje dat correspondeert met het tekstboek en de
partituur. Daarachter staat de betreffende partij vermeld (YC = Youth
Choir, MC = Male Choir, SC = Scratch Choir en PC = Practiced Choir).
Het laatste nummer geeft de 1e, 2e, 3e of 4e stem van de betreffende
partij aan. Een voorbeeld: track nummer 6 correspondeert met
nummer 1 uit het tekstboek en de partituur van ‘Born to suffer’ voor
Male Choir en laat de 1e stem horen. Zing maar mee!
