Adverbs of frequency ❤️present simple

(= KEYWORDS for the present simple)

DEFINITION:
We use adverbs of frequency to say how many times we do an action. We use the present simple for repeated
actions  we use the present simple with adverbs of frequency.

Order the adverbs of frequency from the one you use when you do an action all the time (100%) to the one you
use when you don’t ever do an action (0%):

HARDLY EVER
SELDOM
OCCASIONALLY
RARELY
NEVER
OFTEN
CONSTANTLY
ALWAYS
SOMETIMES

Word order of sentences with ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY + VERB (eat; drink; sleep; write…-> NOT “TO BE”) in the
present simple:
Ed usually plays sports (affirmative )
Ed doesn’t usually play sports (negative)
Does Ed usually play sports? (interrogative 1)
When does Ed usually play sports? (interrogative 2)

She always eats an omelet for breakfast.


Susie often plays football.
I sometimes cry at night.
You occasionally work in the afternoon.
They rarely sleep in the garage.
My brother never eats macaroni with cheese.

!!! occasionally & sometimes can also be used at the start of the sentence
