Valentine's in Canada
Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada as well as in the United States or other
Western countries. One romantic couple sets high expectations for a meaningful gift
and the other couple scrambles to buy that meaningful gift, that is, lingerie, flowers,
chocolates, or something else possibly frivolous. Alternatively, many couples avoid
empty shopping just because the media tells them to do so, and instead spend quality
time with their loved ones, eating and watching a movie.

History of Valentine's Day Although

Valentine's Day may be thought by many to be a holiday promoted by business and

marketing forces (i.e. the greeting card, lingerie, or flower industry), it actually has a
story, though not fully confirmed, dating back to pre-Christian times. She was Roman
when a pagan fertility festival was held in mid-February. Later, under the reign of
Emperor Claudius, a priest named Valentine was executed for marrying young couples,
something that had been forbidden. Some 200 years later, the Pope declared February
14 Valentine's Day, a Christian holiday.

As observed?
Valentine's Day is a business day as always. Businesses, schools, government offices,
and retail stores remain open and transportation occurs on a regular schedule. In
general, couples exchange Valentine's gifts. The most popular gifts to give are
chocolates, flowers, lingerie, dinner, or a romantic outing. Restaurant reservations or
theater tickets may be harder to come by than usual.
