Normal-types are often found in positions of mentorship, education, and

creativity. They tend to be adaptable and adept communicators, whether that

be via education, business, or the arts. They may be exemplary at what they
do, though their ambitions are usually community oriented and altruistic
rather than for personal glory. Versatile, resilient, and community-oriented,
Normal-types seek to amplify the voices of their communities.
Key Abilities: Adaptability, Scrappy, Cute Charm, Technician
Key Moves: Assist, Baton Pass, Endure, Hyper Beam, Hold Hands, Hyper Voice
Key Items: Blank Plate, Silk Scarf, Chilan Berry, Legend Plate, Luck Incense
Key Characters: Cheren, Lenora, Ilima, Guild-master Wigglytuff, Deputy Chatot, Rider
Willie (Colosseum), Oichi (Conquest)

Fighting-types are disciplined, physically and mentally. They are competitive

and strive for greatness and victory. But to a Fighting-type, winning
underhandedly may as well not be winning at all. Broadly speaking, Fighting-
types come in two styles: hard and soft. Hard-style Fighting-types strike
hard, fast, and first. They take the initiative and set the pace. Soft-style
Fighting types are observant, adaptive, and intuitive. They adjust to the
pace and go with the flow. But nearly all Fighting-types care deeply about
fairness, justice, and honor and can often be found fiercely championing the
causes of others.
Key Abilities: Inner Focus, Justified, Scrappy
Key Moves: No Retreat, Victory Dance, Revenge
Key Items: Fist Plate, Black Belt, Chople Berry, Choice Band, Focus Sash, Muscle
Band, Expert Belt
Key Characters: Marshall, Hala, Riley, Brawly, Korrina, Lucario, Eri, Dendera,
Mustard, Ranmaru (Conquest)
Flying-types often come across to others as either aloof or flighty. And,
indeed, it’s not uncommon for them to be somewhat out of touch with the
world. That’s not always a bad thing though, as their detached nature gives
them unique perspectives; and their indifference to the judgment of others
makes them uniquely suited to share those perspectives. Their distant
dispositions also tend to bely peculiar skillsets and a Keen Eye for detail
and precision. While Flying isn’t an uncommon secondary type, true primary
Flying-types are actually the rarest of all types. Flying-types are
visionaries, philosophers, and dreamers.
Key Abilities: Cloud Nine, Keen Eye, Gale Wings
Key Moves: Acrobatics, Defog, Fly
Key Items: Sky Plate, Sharp Beak, Coba Berry, Air Balloon
Key Characters: Winona, Kahili, Skyla, Larry, Falkner, Masamune (Conquest)

Poison-types don’t care about how conventionally pretty or societally

pleasant their appearances or actions are, so long as they serve their needs.
They typically have a sharp cognizance of societal norms and expectations,
but often specifically choose to defy them — sometimes publicly and sometimes
privately. But whether they occupy the spotlight or the shadows, Poison-types
play the long game. They have their eyes on the prize, but they aren’t
rushing to claim it. Poison-types are patient, persistent, and observant.
Haste is for Fire- and Electric-types; Poison-types wait for their
opportunities like ambush predators. Thoughtless action and moments of
passion are antithetical to Poison-types.
Key Abilities: Corrosion, Poison Touch, Liquid Ooze, Poison Heal
Key Moves: Toxic, Acid Spray, Corrosive Gas, Mortal Spin, Venoshock, Purify
Key Items: Black Sludge, Toxic Orb, Toxic Plate, Poison Barb, Kebia Berry
Key Characters: Skuntank (Team Skull), Roxie, Koga, Janine, Plumeria, Klara
Ground-types are powerful people, whether in terms of material success or
personal fortitude. They tend to be practical, level-headed, and
materialistic. They are typically unconcerned with loftier ideals and goals,
though that doesn’t mean they are necessarily unambitious. In fact, Ground-
types prefer to be at the top of the food chain; they have a talent for
climbing hierarchies and rarely think to question or dismantle them. Unlike
Bug-types, who easily discard old identities and create new ones, Ground-
types have a solid, unwavering, sense of self. They are determined, stubborn,
and slow to change.
Key Moves: Earthquake, Dig, High Horsepower
Key Abilities: Arena Trap, Sturdy, Stamina
Key Items: Earth Plate, Soft Sand, Shuca Berry, Thick Club, Nugget
Key Characters: Clay, Bertha, Giovanni, Hapu, Rika, Kiyomasa (Conquest)

Grass-types remain calm, hopeful, and optimistic in nearly any scenario.

Typically nurturing and community-oriented, they can see the good and
potential in everyone they meet. Grass-types see the forest for the forest:
they have a keen awareness of the interconnectedness of all things and a
willingness to sacrifice for the greater good and the health of the group.
They are also resourceful and willing to take action others might deem
extreme. Yet Grass-types are typically unconcerned with fame, accolades, or
status, and their actions — no matter how drastic — are born of a genuine
concern for others.
Key Abilities: Overgrow, Chlorophyll, Natural Cure, Mycelium Might
Key Moves: Aromatherapy, Strength Sap, Trailblaze, Solarbeam, Leech Seed, Giga Drain
Key Items: Meadow Plate, Miracle Seed, Rindo Berry, Rose Incense, Absorb Bulb, Big
Root, White Herb
Key Characters: Grovyle (from the Future of Darkness), Celebi (from the Future of
Darkness), Gardenia, Erika, Brassius
Bug-types are inquisitive and open minded; they see beauty in that which
others find unsettling. Bug-types are adaptable, self-reflective, and respond
to change with grace and eagerness. They are resilient, but not in the way
that Normal or Grass-types are. Bug-types don’t merely persevere, they
transform. Of all the types, they are the most likely to completely reinvent
themselves, comfortable with discarding old parts of their identity and
fashioning themselves into something new. Others might find it inauthentic or
unsettling, but to a Bug-type, those discarded shells and scales are what
have become inauthentic.
Key Moves: Bug Bite, First Impression, Quiver Dance, U-Turn, Silver Wind, String Shot
Key Abilities: Compoundeyes, Tinted Lens, Shed Skin, Swarm, Unnerve
Key Items: Insect Plate, Net Ball, Silver Powder, Tanga Berry, Shed Shell
Key Characters: Bugsy, Aaron, Burgh, Viola, Guzma, Katy

Most Ghost-types are keenly aware of the realities of pain, cruelty, and
mortality — though the response to that awareness varies. For some, it is
detachment. For others: rage. For others still: compassion. Perhaps this
awareness is also what makes many Ghost-types brilliant artists and thinkers.
Ghost types are clearsighted and unafraid to confront reality — a trait that
sometimes makes them outsiders to their larger communities. Widespread
appreciation for a Ghost-type’s contributions may not come till they
themselves are well beyond the grave.
Key Moves: Ominous Wind, Rage Fist, Last Respects, Destiny Bond, Spite
Key Abilities: Wandering Spirit, Cursed Body, Frisk (Unobstructed Sight)
Key Items: Griseous Orb, Kasib Berry, Spell Tag, Spooky Plate, Cleanse Tag, Dusk
Stone, Reaper Cloth
Key Characters: Dusknoir (from the Future of Darkness), Shauntal, Fantina, Ryme,
Pheobe, Morty
Dragon-types are concerned with legacy, either upholding one they’ve
inherited, subverting one they’ve inherited, or creating one of their own.
They recognize they stand upon the shoulders of giants, and they seek to
become giants that others will stand upon. As a result, they tend to be
intense and passionate people that hyper-specialize in a chosen subject — be
it history, art, music, wrestling, politics, etc. To many, their hyper-
fixations and intensity can make them seem unrelatable, eccentric, or even
intimidating. And, indeed, Dragon-types are intense and fervent people. But
whatever their chosen speciality, they all have a great appreciation for its
respective stories, traditions, legends, and myths.
Key Moves: Draco Meteor, Roar of Time, Spacial Rend, Dragon Dance, Outrage
Key Abilities: Mold Breaker, Shed Skin, Levitate, Power Construct
Key Items: Adamant Orb, Draco Plate, Dragon Fang, Griseous Orb, Haban Berry, Lustrous
Orb, Soul Dew, Dragon Scale, Fossilized Drake
Key Characters: Iris, Zinnia, Hassel, Cynthia, Drasna, Clair, Lance, Drayden, Drake

An Ice-type might say that artifice is the best way to communicate truth; and
some might say that Ice is the most beautiful type. But it’s a beauty built
and carefully crafted with discipline, precision, and practice. Ice-types
operate in terms of order, systems, and duty. The world is chaotic, but,
still, they do their best to create an oasis of order through organization,
prioritization, lists, and routine. Ironically, that cold discipline and
organization is often accompanied by a fierce passion and warm disposition.
Ice-types often spend years of considered practice utilizing both their cold
methods and flaming passion to master a skill or craft. Like snowflakes, each
individual Ice-type is both uniquely beautiful and beautifully precise.
Key Moves: Aurora Veil, Sheer Cold, Triple Axel, Blizzard
Key Abilities: Ice Body, Ice Scales, Snow Warning, Snow Cloak
Key Items: Icicle Plate, Never-Melt Ice, Snowball, Yache Berry
Key Characters: Aya (Conquest), Mitsuhide (Conquest), Lorelei, Brycen, Gaeric,
Grusha, Pryce, Melody Froslass (Crevice Cave)
Fairy-types are animating and vitalizing to those around them. Some have a
sweet and amiable disposition, while others are intense and austere; and
others still are bright and ostentatious. But all Fairy-types are alike in
that at least half their brains are in the realm of fantasy. Like Ice-types,
Fairy-types enjoy a bit of artifice. To them, truth is just something we made
up — and something we could easily remake for the better. They pull fiction
from reality and creation from imagination. Fairy-types are almost
universally preoccupied with aesthetics, art, and the process of art’s
creation. That’s not to say they are at all superficial, however. Quite the
opposite, a Fairy-type’s presented exterior often belies hidden fangs and a
deeply thoughtful, resilient, individual.
Key Moves: Moonblast, Dazzling Gleam, Decorate, Geomancy, Nature’s Madness, Fairy
Wind, Draining Kiss, Disarming Voice
Key Abilities: Pixilate, Fairy Aura, Misty Surge
Key Items: Fairy Feather, Pixie Plate, Roseli Berry, Misty Seed, Whipped Dream
Key Characters: Valerie, Opal, Bede, Mina, Ortega, Xerneas (Diancie and the Cocoon
of Destruction), Diancie (Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction)

Dark-types are clever, quick-witted, and know how to use most any situation
to their advantage. Unlike Ground-types, who climb hierarchies, and Dragon-
types, who uphold legacies, Dark-types often seek to flatten hierarchies and
upend systems. Dark-types aren’t afraid of bending rules and defying
expectations. Though they care little for honor and justice, as Dark-types
mature they develop a profound empathy for victims of injustice. They
understand that the world isn’t always fair, and few can afford the luxury of
dignity. If the people at the top don’t have to be fair, why should they be?
Key Moves: Foul Play, Knock Off, Fake Tears, Beat Up
Key Abilities: Dark Aura, Prankster, Unnerve, Moxie
Key Items: Black Glasses, Colbur Berry, Dread Plate, Razor Claw
Key Characters: Karen, Grimsley, Nanu, Marnie, Piers, Zoroark
Psychic-types are loyal and compassionate. They tend to feel strongly and
empathize deeply with those around them. In less developed Psychic-types,
that intensity can be unfocused and childish. But mature Psychic-types tend
to be intellectual, emotionally intelligent, and principled. When confronted
with pain and injustice, most Psychic-types can neither close their eyes nor
harden their hearts. As a result, like many Fighting-types, many Psychic
types can be found devoting themselves to a cause — be it through action,
support, sacrifice, or study. Psychic-types are also simultaneously
fascinated by and comfortable with the unknown and the esoteric; they are
driven by a desire to know but are also comfortable with the knowledge that
there will always be that which they do not know. As a result, you can find
Psychic-types in spaces that are both scientifically rigorous as well as
spaces that are spiritual and esoteric.

Gardevoir (Rescue Team), Caitlyn, Bede, Lucian, Sabrina, Tulip, Dexio
Water-types nearly always occupy some sort of artistic, creative, or
performative space. And even those that don’t are still creatively and
artistically inclined. It is often said that Water is the most beautiful
type. But unlike Ice-types, the beauty of Water-types isn’t born of
discipline and precisely crafted artifice, but in the ebb and flow of
inspiration and in the reflection of their lived experiences. Despite their
affinity for performance, Water-types are deeply concerned with truth and
“the real”; their art and performance often tries to clarify and reflect the
reality of life — from its compassion and beauty to its terror and despair —
as often as entertains and pleases. Water-types prefer not to limit their own
potential to a single medium, so they often pursue several interests
simultaneously. They allow their intuitive flow to guide them — whether it’s
a raging tsunami one minute or a trickling stream the next.
Key Moves: Hydro Pump, Surf, Waterfall, Rain Dance (Rain Prayer), Sparkling Aria,
Wave Crash
Key Abilities: Swift Swim, Torrent, Drizzle, Water Absorb, Regenerator

Fire-types are contrasts of intense passions and laissez-faire attitudes.
They might be a quiet ember one moment and a raging inferno the next. As a
result, less developed Fire-types often seem wild and thoughtless. Mature
Fire-types, on the other hand, know how to use these oscillations in energy
and creativity to their advantage and, as a result, come across as magnetic
and effervescent. Though their somewhat capricious demeanors might suggest
otherwise, Fire-types have long memories and a respect for those who came
before. They can be prone to holding longstanding grudges, but are also
steadfast in their commitments, goals, and promises.
Key Moves: Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Sunny Day, Overheat, Sacred Fire, Mystical Fire,
Torch Song, Bitter Blade
Key Abilities: Flash Fire, Solar Power, Blaze, Flame Body, Drought
Key Items: Charcoal, Flame Plate, Flame Orb, Occa Berry, Heat Rock, Magmarizer
Key Characters: Blaine, Flannery, Flint, Ninetales (Rescue Team), Malva, Kiawe,
Kabu, Hanbei (Conquest)

Electric-types are almost always in motion. Their constant momentum always

has them moving from one thing to the next — the next project, the next
milestone, the next adventure. Mature Electric-types recognize that momentum
can only carry them so far before the spark goes out. As such, they respect
the need to recharge — a lesson that young Electric-types usually learn
through burnout. Their constant pursuit of the next greatest thing means
Electric-types are always on the cutting edge. They’re innovators and icons
and trendsetters.
Key Moves: Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, Electrify, Volt Switch, Wild Charge
Key Abilities: Galvanize, Lightning Rod, Motor Drive, Volt Absorb, Static, Electric
Surge
Key Items: Cell Battery, Magnet, Wacan Berry, Zap Plate, Electirizer, Light Ball

(Colosseum)
Steel-types are resilient and unfazed by difficult situations. Their iron
composure might come across as cold and unfeeling, but many Steel-types are
actually quite warm and gentle. Nonetheless, a Steel-type’s ability to remain
perpetually calm means they excel in high-stress vocations, like medicine,
law, and high-level sports. To a Steel-type, the best offense is good
defense. They are patient and take time to prepare — physically, emotionally,
financially, and so on — for the challenges they see coming (and probably
also for the ones they don’t).
Key Moves: Iron Defense, Iron Head, Gyro Ball, Metal Burst, Mirror Shot, Shelter
Key Abilities: Heavy Metal, Light Metal, Iron Barbs, Steely Spirit, Magnet Pull
Key items: Adamant Orb, Babiri Berry, Iron Plate, Metal Coat, Metronome, Soothe Bell
Key Characters: Jasmine, Steven Stone, Byron, Colress, Wikstrom, Ieyasu (Conquest),
Dialga (Explorers)

Rock-types value collaboration, confidence, as well as intellectual rigor and

clarity. Most Rock-types see the inevitabilities of pressure and hardship as
opportunities for both personal and communal growth. After all, diamonds only
sparkle when coal is pushed to its limit — and Carbink are social creatures.
Rock-types also have a profound appreciation for the past — history,
archaeology, paleontology — not because it is inherently valuable to them,
but because they appreciate the varied insights and perspectives that those
who came before have to offer. Ultimately, Rock-types are forward looking
individuals, unrelenting in their pursuits; they just do so while informed by
the knowledge of the past.
Key Moves: Rock Slide, Diamond Storm, Stealth Rock, Wide Guard, Ancient Power, Meteor

Key Abilities: Sturdy, Clear Body, Sand Stream, Rock Head
Key Items: Charti Berry, Hard Stone, Rock Incense, Stone Plate, Protector, Rocky
