Safety footwear protects against
hazards ranging from dermatitis to
crushing injuries. Within this broad
range of hazards, consideration
needs to be given to the possibility of
contact with chemicals, extremes of
heat, slippery surfaces, punctures
from nails or other sharps objects,
and electrical hazards both live and
static. All personnel working in, or
visiting, potentially hazardous areas
such as construction sites,
workshops, process areas, etc. must
wear safety footwear at all times
while in the area.

Foot Protection Requirements

 OSHA 1910.136(a) General requirements. The
employer shall ensure that each affected employee
uses protective footwear when working in areas
where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling
or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, and
where such employee's feet are exposed to electrical
hazards. Does it offer protection against the specific
occupational exposure, such as temperature
extremes, falling objects, electrical hazards, etc?

Training and Qualification

Employees shall be trained to know at least the following:
 When PPE is necessary

 What PPE is necessary
 How to properly don, doff, adjust,
and wear PPE
 The limitations of the PPE
 The proper care, maintenance,
useful life, and disposal of the
PPE

Training and Qualification

Retraining is required, but not limited to, the following situations:
 Changes in the workplace

 Changes in the types of PPE
to be used
 Inadequacies in an affected
employee’s knowledge or
use of assigned PPE indicate
that the employee has not
retained the requisite
understanding or skill

PPE Requirements
Protectors must:
• Provide adequate protection against the particular hazards

for which they are designed
• Be of safe design and construction for the work to be
performed
• Be reasonably comfortable
• Fit snugly and shall not unduly interfere with the movements
of the wearer
• Be durable
• Be easily cleanable

Safety Shoes Inspection

Safety shoes should be
inspect daily for signs of
wear or damage, the outer
and inner toe & sole
should be inspected for
"dents, and any damage
due to impact, penetration,
abrasions, rough treatment
or wear that might reduce
the degree of protection
originally provided."

 When inspecting safety footwear to see if it needs to be replaced,
shoes with steel toe caps will offer more tactile clues than shoes
with composite material toecaps. For example, if a heavy object
falls on a steel toe shoe, the steel cap will be dented and will not
"spring back," indicating that the shoe must be replaced.
Composite material shoes, on the other hand, could be
"irrevocably damaged" in the same incident and still maintain their
form.
 If shoes are tattered and worn, the toes are poking through the
sides, the steel toe is visible through the leather, then common
sense tells you it's time to get a new pair of shoes

 Evaluating the tread on a slip-
resistant safety shoe. Once tread, or
outsole, shows signs of damage or
wear, the shoe likely is reaching
retirement age.
 The purpose of inspection simply is to
raise awareness of two important
safety issues: knowing when workers
should replace their safety footwear
and knowing the best ways to care for
safety footwear in order to extend its
life as long as possible

Selecting PPE for the Workplace
Choosing the appropriate shoe for the specific

demands of the job is essential to ensuring that a
safety shoe provides the proper protection. But
selecting the correct shoe for the job is only half the
battle. The other half is monitoring safety footwear
for signs that the shoe may need to be "retired .
