CHAPTER 3

PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

A fire extinguisher is a portable device designed to extinguish small fires by deploying an

extinguishing agent. It's an essential tool for fire safety, allowing individuals to respond quickly
to incipient fires before they escalate. Fire extinguishers come in various types and sizes, but
they typically consist of a cylindrical pressure vessel containing an extinguishing agent under
pressure.

The main components of a fire extinguisher include:

Cylinder: The container that holds the extinguishing agent. It's usually made of metal and is
pressurized to allow the agent to discharge when needed.

Extinguishing Agent: The substance or material within the cylinder that is expelled to
suppress or extinguish the fire. Different types of extinguishers contain different agents suited
for specific classes of fires.

Nozzle or Discharge Horn: The outlet through which the extinguishing agent is expelled onto
the fire.

Pressure Gauge or Indicator: Some fire extinguishers have a gauge or indicator to show the
pressure level within the cylinder, ensuring that the device is charged and operational.
