Mum: Yes she is, she’s had a rough night. Can you please come back when
she’s up?

Bad Nurse: Do you see the time? Anyways she needs to wake up

Mum: If it is necessary, but can you please do it quietly she’s still sleeping

Bad Nurse: Yes it is necessary. I need to do her obs now, I’m very busy.

While doing obs … Machine alarms

Mum: Oh my God, what is that loud noise for? Turn if off!!

Bad Nurse: It happens all the time calm down, just press one of those buttons
it’ll go off.

Mum: Yes I know it happens all the time, can you call someone to turn it off
for me since you can’t. My daughter is still sleeping.

Bad Nurse: I know how to do my job, I’m a nurse for a reason. I need to go
anyways. If it keeps ringing somebody will come and turn it off.
Roleplay 2: Good communication
Good Nurse: Safia

Mum: Hannah

Nurse: hello, I am here to do checks on Safia to make sure make everything is going
well

Mum: yes, that’s fine it was a struggle to get her to sleep

Nurse starts to check oxygen levels and Machine beeps: ……….

Nurse: oh no

Mum: What’s happening what have you done, it has been a struggle to get safia to
sleep

Nurse: I am so sorry I had no intention of making the alarm goes off

Mum: could you please turn it off as it is making my child cry

Nurse: I am a student nurse, and I have not had the training for this therefore I am
unable to turn it off however, I will go and get a nurse who can help

Mum: Do you mean to tell me they put my child’s life on a student nurse who
doesn’t know what they’re doing?!!

Nurse: I am sorry for this incident and I will make sure to not repeat it again please
do let me know if you require any assistance.
