Review Crash

1) Describe what the movie is about and try to bring the different
storylines stories together (including major characters, plot and
outcome)
The movie follows eight completely different kind of people from Los Angeles, including a district
attorney, an Iranian shop owner, two detectives, a television director, a Mexican locksmith, two car
thieves, a police rookie, and a Asan couple. The film begins with a car crash involving police detective
Ria, her African-American partner Graham Water, and an Asian American driver. The story then moves
to the day before, where Farhad, an Iranian shop owner, is thrown out by a white gun shop owner but
his daughter being allowed to buy a gun. Two young black men, Anthony and Peter, are discussing racial
discrimination when they walk by a white couple. They steal the SUV from the white couple, which
names are Rick and Jean. Later, a police officer, John Ryan, molests and humilliates an African American
couple, Cameron Thayer and his wife Christine. Daniel, a locksmith, after repairing the lock of Farhad
and saying it’s not the lock that’s broken but the door. When he comes home, he finds his daughter Lara
hiding under her bed and e calms her down by putting an imaginary cloak of protection on her.

As Anthony and Peter drive, they accidentally run over an Asian man and after a long discussion they
take him to the hospital. Farhad discover his shop has been broken into and believes it’s Daniel’s fault.
Officer Ryan visits Shaniqua, but his racism causes him to be thrown out. Ryan then encounters a car
accident, where Christine Thayer is trapped in an upside-down car. Officer Ryan saves her life by pulling
her out of the car just in time. Anthony and Peter attempt to steal Cameron's car, but he fights back.
When a police car approches, Peter flees, and both Anthony and Cameron get into Cameron's SUV.
Cameron drives off, still fighting with Anthony, and he eventually takes Anthony’s gun. Police cars
surround the SUV, and Anthony hides but Cameron gets out and is confrontational toward the police
officers, with one of them being Hansen. Hansen calms Cameron down and persudes the other officers
to let him go. Cameron drops Anthony off at a bus stop. Farhad confronts Daniel with a gun outside his
home, and Lara runs out with the “invisible cloak of protection” and leaps into her father’s arms just as
Farhad fires the gun. The gun, however, is loaded with blanks, and no one is hurt. Later, Hansen picks up
Peter, who is hitchhiking, but when Peter reaches into his pocket, Hansen thinks that he is reaching for a
gun and shoots him. He pushes Peter’s body out of the car and sets the car on fire. We go back to the
beginning scene where Peter’s body has been found; Peter turns out to be Waters’s brother. Anthony
finds the white van of the Korean man and decides steals it. He drives it to a chop shop, where several
refuges are found inside the van. Anthony then takes the van to Chinatown and releases them. A small
crash happens nearby and the movie ends.

3) What is the dominant theme in this movie?
The most prominent theme in this film is probably the continuous Racism, In our modern times
this is also a problem although we often think that only white people can racist This is proven
wrong in this film where all characters are racist. The black policeman continually says that his
partner is white and does not bother correcting himself even though she is from south America.
We also see a few major American problems like corrupt police and drugs.

4) Why is this movie named Crash?

This movie is called Crash for 2 reasons it starts with a car crash and later on in the film the
racist police officer saves the filmmaker's wife from a car crash and to conclude it the film ends
with a car crash. Secondly, all these crashes are related, all the Crashes bring tragedy so it could
also be called Crash because the world figuratively came crashing down on all the characters.

5) What character in the movie was the most interesting to you?

Explain with detail
I think Daniel the locksmith is the most interesting because he seems a good and loving dad, and in
contrast with all the other characters he doesn’t have a problem like them. He moved to another house
because, in his old neighborhood, a bullet was shot through the window. His daughter is scared that the
bullet will find her, so to satisfy her he tells her a story about how he got a magical invisible cloak from a
fairy that protects him as long as he wears it. He then “puts” the cloak on her and tells her she’ll be save
as long as she wears it.

6) do you think this movie is an accurate portrayal of life in

America?
I’m not quite sure but I think it is. The movie shows a lot of racism and that there is a big difference
between poor and rich in America. Although the movie is supposed to be anti-racist to be honest I find it
kind of racist, because we don’t see a poor white person stealing a car, but a African-American stealing a
car and living in poverty. Also I think that the N-word is said waaaayy to many times. It’s a pretty strange
movie and I’m not sure what to think about it.

7) What is your personal opinion about this movie?

This film is well-made and proves a good point, about racism. But The storyline is very confusing with
every character having their own story, it is exceedingly difficult to remember and understand who each
character is and what they are done. There is also no cler anatoganist and protagonist, and it is a very
disappointing ending, because everybody is a loser in the end.To summarise I think its well-made and its
good to learn about racism, but this story is exceedingly difficult to understand which outweighs the
pros so wasn't really a fan of it (I watch tv to relax). I also do not think this film deserves an Oscar. I
would rate this a 5/10

8) What can we learn from this movie?

We learn from this movie that all our actions are related and thing's don’t always go how you
expected. Secondly you learn not to make accusations without evedience as this also often
backfires as we saw with the iranian man who accuses the locksmith of being a gangsta and
wanting to rob his house even though he was probally the most honest in the whole film.
Thirdly we can learn that selling guns in supermarkets does not work at all. And often leads to
people making rash decisions like the Iranian men or they can cause confusion and mistrust like
with the good police officer in the car who shoots the hitchhiker in his car when he
misunderstood his action for him grabbing a gun.
