Computer Port
Computer Port is an interface or a point of connection between the computer and its peripheral
devices. Some of the common peripherals are mouse, keyboard, monitor or display unit, printer,
speaker, flash drive etc.
Functions of a Computer Port
The main function of a computer port is to act as a point of attachment, where the cable from the
peripheral can be plugged in and allows data to flow from and to the device.
Characteristics of Computer Ports
The characteristics of the computer port include the following:
1: It is an interface between external devices as well as a computer.
2: Ports on the motherboard can be connected using an external device cable by plugging in.
3: The external devices which are connected through via ports are the keyboard, mouse,
microphone, monitor, speakers, etc.
Types of Computer Ports
There are different types of ports available in a computer network. Some of them are discussed
below.external devices which are connected through via ports are the keyboard, mouse,
microphone, monitor, speakers, etc.

Display Port
PS/02 Computer Port
It is a DIN connector available with 6-pins. This type of port is used to connect keyboard &
mouse. It is developed and introduced by the personal systems of IBM. These ports are available
in color-coded. For the keyboard, it is purple whereas, for the mouse, it is green.

Serial Port
A serial port is used to connect peripherals with the help of a serial protocol to
transmit the 1-bit data at a time over an only communication line. The best
example of this port is D-Subminiature otherwise a D-sub connector and the
main function of these ports are to carry RS232 signals.

Parallel Port
A parallel port is also used as an interface between a computer & its peripheral device with the
help of a wire or above one communication line. The best example of this port is a printer port.
Ethernet Port
This type of port is used to unite the network cable to a PC. Once the cable is plugged into
Ethernet port, then it can lead either to a cable modem, network hub, an Internet gateway or DSL
modem. Most of the computers built with an Ethernet port. If the port is damaged, then it can be
changed by integrating the adapter card.
VGA Port
VGA stands for Video Graphics Array. It is a 3 row with a 15-pin DE-15 connector. It is used in
many monitors, laptops, video cards, projectors, etc. Sometimes, this port was used on laptops
otherwise other portable devices in place of the full-size VGA connector.
USB Port
There are different types of ports are used in a computer network, in that a USB port is the most
commonly used one. The universal serial bus port is very successful. The main function of this
port is to connect all the peripherals to PCs like printers, keyboards, external hard drives, mice,
scanners, cameras, and many more. This port is available on all kinds of computers like laptops,
desktops, notebooks, tablets, etc.
DVI Port
This port is a digital interface among the display controller of computers as well as video o/p
device such as a monitor otherwise projector. This was developed to allow the lossless
transmission of digital video signals as well as to change the analog VGA technology.
HDMI Computer Port
HDMI stands for “High Definition Multimedia Interface”. It works like a digital interface to
connect High Definition as well as Ultra High Definition devices like HDTVs, computer
monitors, gaming consoles, HD Cameras, Blu-Ray players, etc. This port carries audio signals
like compressed/uncompressed & uncompressed video.
This port includes 19-pins and HDMI 2.0 is the latest version, used to carry digital video signal
up to 4096×2160 resolution &32 audio channels.
Display Computer Port
This type of port is one kind of digital display interface including multiple audio channels &
other types of data. This port was developed by an association of computers as well as
chipmakers. These ports are Sony, Maxell, Philip & Lattice and then it was standardized through
the VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association). The main intention of this Port is to
replace DVI & VGA ports. It carries audio, video, USB and other types of data. It is scalable
with other types of interfaces like DVI & HDMI by using active otherwise passive adapters. The
most recent version of this port is Display Port 1.3 that can handle up to 7680 X 4320
resolutions.
CONNECTORS

• Connector:

A connector is the unique end of a plug, jack, or the edge of a card that connects to a port.
For example, all desktop computer expansion cards have a connector that allows them to
connect in a slot on the motherboard. When referring to cables, the connector is the end of
the cable that connects into a port.

• Types of connectors:

Following are the types of connectors.

1. DB-9, 9-pin male connector:

A connector is the unique end of a plug, jack, or the edge of a card that connects to a port.
For example, all desktop computer expansion cards have a connector that allows them to
connect in a slot on the motherboard. When referring to cables, the connector is the end of
the cable that connects into a port.

2. Db-9, 9-pin female connector:

They can easily be soldered to a custom length cable creating a durable connection for all
applications. These connectors are made with high-quality materials to ensure durability
and long life.

3. DB-15HD, 15-pin high density female:

The Video Graphics Array (VGA) connector is a standard connector used for computer
video output. Originating with the 1987 IBM PS/2 and its VGA graphics system, the 15-pin
connector went on to become ubiquitous on PCs, as well as many monitors, projectors and
high definition television sets .The HD15 is a High Density DB-style connector, so it can
also be called an HD DB15.

4. 24-pin DVI:

DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface. DVI cables are used to connect a video signal from
computers to LCD monitors, HDTV displays, projectors, and cable boxes. DVI-D cables
carry a digital video signal. DVI-A cables carry a high-quality analog signal.

The DVI with 24-pins is called a DVI-D Dual link. The DVI with 18 pins is called a DVI-D
single link. The difference between the two is the resolutions they are able to achieve. It can
make a difference in a DVI to DVI cable connecting a computer to a monitor with an
extremely high resolution.

5. DB-25, 25-pin male:

The DB25 or D-subminiature or D-sub is a common type of electrical connector. …

Connector usually contains two or more parallel rows of pins or sockets surrounded by a
D-shaped metal shield that provides mechanical support, ensures correct orientation, and
screen against electromagnetic interference.

6. DB-25, 25-pin female:

DB25 Female Solder Connector, In the assembly of a working cable, the connector is
essential to provide the actual connection interface between two devices. Such an important
function relies on durable and reliable materials, manufacturing, and design.

7. 36-pin female, mini ribbon:

These 36 Pin Female Solder Centronics Connectors are used to terminate the connection
type of round cable. They can easily be soldered to a custom length cable as well as create a
custom pinout, creating a permanent and durable connection for all applications.

8. 36-pin Centronics female:

The Centronics 36-pin connector is arranged in two rows of pins, each with 18 contacts.
The connector is held in place by bail locks. The 36-pin connector is often used for parallel
applications, especially for printers. It is also referred to as an IEEE-1284 Type B
connector.

connector family. The prefix “D” represents the D-shape of the connector shell. The DB15
connector is mainly used in serial and parallel ports, allowing asynchronous data
transmission according to the RS-232 standard (RS-232C).

11. USB:

A universal serial bus (USB) connector is a connector between a computer and a peripheral
device such as a printer, monitor, scanner, mouse or keyboard. It is part of the USB
interface, which includes types of ports, cables and connectors. … Prior to the USB
interface, peripheral devices had a multitude of connectors.

12. FireWire:

FireWire, which is also called IEEE 1394, is a connecting device used primarily for adding
peripherals to a computer. FireWire is often used for connecting external hard drives and
digital camcorders that benefit from a high transfer rate. These transfer rates are often up
to 800 Mbps.
13. RJ-11, 6-pin female modular telephone:

A registered jack is a standardized telecommunication network interface for connecting

voice and data equipment to a service provided by a local exchange carrier or long distance
carrier.RJ11 often use 6P4C connectors (six position, four conductor) with four wires. Two
of the six possible contact positions connect tip and ring, and the other two conductors are
unused.

(Registered Jack-11) A telephone interface that uses a cable of twisted wire pairs and a
modular jack with two, four or six contacts. RJ-11 is the common connector for plugging a
telephone into the wall and the handset into the telephone. See modular connector.

14. RJ-45, 8-pin female:

RJ45 is a type of connector commonly used for Ethernet networking. It looks similar to a
telephone jack, but is slightly wider. Since Ethernet cables have an RJ45 connector on each
end, Ethernet cables are sometimes also called RJ45 cables.

The “RJ” in RJ45 stands for “registered jack,” since it is a standardized networking
interface. The “45” simply refers to the number of the interface standard. Each RJ45
connector has eight pins, which means an RJ45 cable contains eight separate wires. If you
look closely at the end of an Ethernet cable, you can actually see the eight wires, which are
each a different color. Four of them are solid colors, while the other four are striped.
RJ45 cables can be wired in two different ways. One version is called T-568A and the other
is T-568B.

15. 5-pin, 180° female DIN:

The 5 Pin DIN Female Solder Connector is an economic and lightweight metal connector.
The metal construction provides a sturdier connector. The jack comes in four parts and
can be easily disassembled for access to the solder cups.

16. BNC male connector:

The BNC connector (initialism of “Bayonet Neill–Concelman”) is a miniature quick

connect/disconnect radio frequency connector used for coaxial cable.

17. 6-pin Mini Din (PS/2):

The 6-Pin Mini Din has 6 pins as well as a keying block. This interface was first used on the
IBM® PS/2 personal computer. For this reason the connector is often called a PS/2
connector. This connector has become the industry standard for connecting keyboards and
mice.

18. Miniplug:

A Mini Plug is a 3.5mm male connector found on computer headphone, headset,

microphone, and speakers, which connects to the computer’s sound card. The device you
are using determines where the Mini Plug is inserted into the sound card.
