ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
TEXT: 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18
By Dr. Julius Czar Daoa

Introduction:
 Welcome to our new series for the month of October entitled, “TY: Thanksgiving made easy.”
Paano gagawing biblical, practical at doable ang pagpapasalamat?
 So, for the whole month of October we will learn how to show our appreciation in a biblical and
practical ways. (Month of October is also the “Pastor’s Appreciation Month”)
 Gratitude is an attitude. It is a culture. Dr. John Maxwell said that “culture is powerful than
vision.” So when you create a positive culture in your life, it changes everything.
 Today let’s talk about the attitude of gratitude.
 Your attitude determines your altitude. – John Maxwell
 ILLUSTRATION: (physical effect of feeling thankful)
 How to have an attitude of gratitude?
 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ...give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in
Christ Jesus. NIV
 How to have an attitude of gratitude?

1. GIVE THANKS “OBEDIENTLY”

18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. NIV
 “Giving thanks” is a command to obey.
 give thanks = Gk. eucharisteo ; to be grateful, to express gratitude (towards); specially, to
say grace at a meal:
 Appreciation can heal a lot of depressions. It can lighten up a hard situation. So don’t hoard
appreciation. In fact thanks must be given. That’s why we have thanks-giving.
 Ang pasasalamat ay ipinamimigay at hindi itinatago. “Give”. Mamigay ka naman!
 Good things must be given. Gratitude must be given. It must be released, millions of people a
craving for it.
 Feeling thankful and not expressing it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it.
 How to have an attitude of gratitude? Give thanks obediently.

2. GIVE THANKS “HABITUALLY”

18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. NIV
 How to have an attitude of gratitude? First, give thanks obediently. Second, give thanks
habitually.
 This is the hardest part in this verse.
 all circumstances = Gk. pas ; all, any, every, the whole
 Let’s look really closely at our verse. Some might think that this verse says to be thankful FOR all of our
circumstances. But the verse actually says to be thankful IN all circumstances. The original Hebrew word
for IN that is used here means “in the middle of” or “during.”
 Consider the little word "In"
 It makes a lot of difference when we look at what the Lord is commanding us to do in this verse.
 We are to give thanks IN everything, not necessarily FOR everything!
 God is not instructing us to give thanks for everything in the world… Because we know that the world is
filled with all sorts of wickedness and sin. But He said, "IN every thing give thanks."
 What's the difference?
 If we find ourselves in the midst of blessings ... give thanks to God! But if we find ourselves in the midst of
trials and difficulties-give thanks to God!
 “Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus.” ERV
 How to have an attitude of gratitude? Give thanks habitually.

3. GIVE THANKS “PURPOSEFULLY”

habitually. Third, give thanks purposefully.
 Concerning you / “for you” = Gk. eis (ice); to or into (indicating the point reached or
entered), of place, time, or purpose (result, etc.)
 To to have an attitude of gratitude in your life... be purposeful. It means that in every
circumstance believe that God is doing something... “for you.”
 Always see the hand of God behind every event.
maaayos. At isa pa ikaw ang unang makikinabang dito.
 Always put in mind that God has a better and greater purpose in every circumstance. Be spiritual.
Always see the purpose and not the problem. “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's
will for you in Christ Jesus.”
 If it is God’s will, then it is God’s bill. If it is God’s will, for sure it’s gonna be wonderful.
