Dear Clark,
Our seminar is planned for next weekend. If you’re arriving by plane, we recommend renting a car at the
airport. You can also use public transportation, but there are not many buses on Saturdays and Sundays.
The seminar location will be the Happy Sleeper Hotel, which is only about 25 minutes from the airport by
car. Just go north on State Route 20 for about 15 miles. Take highway exit 9. Then make a left at the
stop sign. Follow this road for about three miles. Then turn left on Lincoln Avenue. After about ten
minutes, you will come to a large intersection with a pharmacy on the left. Turn right onto North Road,
and then take the third left onto Main Street, and you will see the hotel. There’s road construction on
Lincoln Avenue, so don’t arrive during rush hour on Friday afternoon. Last week, I was stuck in a traffic
jam for two hours! It was awful!
See you next weekend!
Rachel

Dear Mrs. Edwards,

I attended your EUROFOOD conference last weekend and was extremely disappointed. The topics were
boring and the workshops were much too long. How can you expect people to sit in uncomfortable
chairs for three hours? After two hours, I wanted to ask for a pillow and a blanket! Also, one of the
speakers wasn’t prepared. He seemed nervous and spoke so quietly that no one could understand him. I
asked him to speak up, but he didn’t. At the end of the last day, I was exhausted. It was really the most
boring conference I’ve ever been to. However, the worst part about the conference was the food. It was
awful! This was very surprising because I thought that a conference on food would at least have good
meals. They only served soup and bread for lunch. There was no fruit or salad. And my vegetarian
colleague couldn’t find anything without meat. I am not planning to go to your next conference in 2019
because this one was so disappointing.
Sincerely,
Julia Peterson

36) Why was Julia disappointed with the 37) What did Julia write about the food?

c) the conference was much too long meal
d) the topics weren’t interesting and the food d) there were too many vegetarian dishes
was bad
38) According to Julia’s email, why won’t she go
to the next conference?
Julia won’t go to the next conference because she
___.

a) doesn’t want to use her money

b) expects that it won’t be good
c) doesn’t have enough time to go
d) thinks it’s too expensive for only one week

– Hi Richard. I’m a colleague of Steve’s. He asked me to meet you here because his seminar ended late.
He’ll be here in about 20 minutes.
– Hi Sally. Thanks for coming.
– I’m happy that I found you. This restaurant is always so crowded. But it was easier than I thought. You
look just like your Facebook picture!
– Yes, I update my photo often.
– So, is this your first time in Berlin?
– No, I come here often.
– How interesting! What do you like to do here?
– Well, I love art, so I’ve been to lots of museums. This time, I’m thinking of going to the
Barberini Museum to see the exhibition on artists from East Germany.
– Wow, that’s great. So am I! I’m surprised that someone from England would be interested in East
German art.
– Well, my family is from East Germany. They moved to England when I was four.
– OK, now I understand. Well, here is my number if you’d like to go to the museum with me. Steve just
texted that he will be here in five minutes. I have to run because I have a meeting at noon. Do you mind?
– No, I don’t mind at all. It was nice talking to you. I’ll call you later in the week about the exhibition.

39) What do Richard and Sally have in common? 40) Why does Sally leave?

Audio Q-1
– What an awful day! My team gave a two-hour presentation on the status of our new operating system,
but our boss, Mr. Kinley, was not impressed. I just don’t understand: We’re working ahead of schedule
and within budget, but he only gave us negative feedback. I know there were some minor problems in
the beginning, but that was only because half of our group was sick. I think the rest of us handled the
situation well and got the project back on track. The boss said we shouldn’t have let personal problems
affect our work. He doesn’t want us to work when we’re sick, does he? He also said our presentation was
confusing and too long. What does he expect? We’re software engineers, not sales managers!

Audio Q-4
– Hi Albert, I’m visiting New York City next week. Have you been there before?
– Hi Jessica, yes, I used to live there.
– Oh great! Then maybe you have some suggestions about what I can do in my free time.
– Sure! What are you interested in?
– I love museums, but I hate places that are crowded and noisy.
– Okay, then don’t go to Ellis Island or the Natural History Museum. There are usually many families and
school groups there. I always suggest going to the National Museum of the American Indian. It’s very
interesting, and not many people know about it.
– Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Thanks for your advice!

Audio Q-6
– My boss wants to have the office redecorated. Now I have to make all the arrangements myself.
– That sounds like a lot of work. What does she want to have done?
– She wants me to order new furniture. And she wants to have everything painted green. Why green?
There are so many other colors that work better for an office.
– What would you prefer?
– I’d prefer a friendly blue or a warm yellow.
– Why don’t you ask her to reconsider?
– I can’t. She’s already made her decision.
– That’s too bad.
– Well, the new furniture will be nice, but I’m not looking forward to working in a green office!

Audio Q-8
– Hi Richard, I’m going to Cape Town next week for a conference. Have you been there before?
– Hi Judy, yes, but only once. I think it was about five years ago.
– Do you have any suggestions about what I can do there?
– That depends. What are you interested in?
– I like anything outdoors: beaches, parks, hiking. And I love taking pictures.
– Well then you have to go to Table Mountain. When you’re on the mountain, you can take beautiful
pictures of the ocean and the city. I suggest listening to the weather forecast before you start hiking. You
don’t want to be on the mountain in the rain.
– Yes, that sounds like a good idea.

Audio Q-10
I have to tell you about the awful experience I had when I rented a car last week! I reserved an SUV, but
they offered me a compact car instead for five people! When I talked to the manager, she was very
impolite. She didn’t smile or say that she was sorry. When I asked her to give me some tips for driving
into Detroit, she said she didn’t have any tips and gave me a map. Then I signed the rental agreement
and left. Never sign a rental agreement without reading it first! When I dropped off the car, they gave me
a bill for over $1,000. No one told me that insurance was an extra $50 a day! I will never rent a car from
that agency again!

Audio Q-13
– Hi Margaret, I’m going to Paris next week on a business trip. Have you been there before?
– Hi John, yes, I’ve been there twice. It’s my favorite city in Europe.
– Do you have any suggestions about what I can do in my free time?
– That depends. What are you interested in?
– Well, I don’t really like museums. But I love taking walks and trying the local cuisine.
– There’s a beautiful park along the Seine. The Seine is a beautiful river. You can walk there for hours. I
like one of the restaurants near the Pont Royal. It’s called Le Voltaire. I suggest making a reservation if
you go there on the weekend.
– That sounds great.
