1.

For an axially loaded bar with varying cross section (see figure below) evaluate following:
(1) Expression for using analytical method, at and at
(2) Expression for using analytical method, at and at
(3) Compare your results with the results obtained by finite element analysis of the bar using
bar elements (use 2, 50, and 500 elements)
Hint: use uniform cross sectional bar elements with cross section derived as the average of
the top and bottom cross section of the element.

2. For the beam shown below:

(1) Find all nodal displacements and support reactions using FEM with 3 elements.
(2) The beam was originally designed without considering support settlement therefore
to neglect the effect of a supporting assembly as shown in figure below is proposed.
Evaluate all spring constants of the supporting assembly. Do we actually need all the
supporting springs? Comment on your answer.
3. For the beam shown below (internal hinge at node 2) evaluate deflection and left and right
rotations at node 2.

Node 2

4. For the plane truss shown in figure below, determine the displacements and reactions. Let
GPa, for elements 1 and 2, and for element 3.
