The Rizal Law (R.A. no.

1425)
One of the important legislations to boost the Filipino nationalism
is the Rizal Law or the Republic Act no. 1425 which highlighted the
following:

1. The study of Rizal’s life, works, and writings to bring about


nationalism among students;

2. The inclusion of the works of Rizal in college curriculum


particularly the study of his novels – Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo.

3. The inclusion also of other works of Rizal such as letters,


paintings, and travels;

4. Funding of the law in order to give supplemental copies of


the novels among public libraries; and

5. The implementation of the law. Though it is not declaring


that Rizal is a national hero, this law might be a step to give
more emphasis on him among the national heroes of the
country.
ANALYSIS ON RIZAL LAW

There are instances when students asking questions us to why they take up the

Rizal course. The following are several answers to be considered:

1. The adoption of the study of Jose Rizal’s life works and writings in colleges

and universities both public and private is mandated by law;

2. The study of Rizal’s works particularly his two important novels- Noli Me

Tangere and El Filibusterismo and other works (poems; diaries; essays) as

well as its translations in Filipino and English should be implemented by the

government;

3. The law mandates that even the secondary levels to study Rizal course

wherein the 3rd year level will study the 1st novel Noli Me Tangere while the

4th level study the 2nd novel El Filibusterismo as part of the Filipino

curriculum.

4. In fostering nationalism among youth, Rizal course can give a wide range of

thoughts on how Rizal and other heroes (MH Del Pilar/Bonifacio/A.Mabini

and others) fought for freedom for the sake of the country’s necessity to

survive against the evil imperialism.

The words “biography” and “autobiography” sometimes used by the


readers interchangeably.

Therefore, the writings of Rizal’s life are divided into two:

1. those persons who wrote for him


2. those letters made by him
