Assignment Brief and Guidance

Media production is a time-consuming and complicated process.

The transformation of ideas, stories, or information into media that can be consumed via audio,
video, or interactively necessarily involves extensive planning and preparation. Creating
storyboards is an important part of the planning process for all types of media productions, from
film and television to interactive websites, apps, and games.

A storyboard is a visual representation of what will appear on the screen for the viewing audience;
it also provides essential instructions to the production and development team that will facilitate
in the creation of resources and scenes. If you’re working with a script, you already know the flow
of your project. The key is to translate that flow from word-form to visual-form. Each image on your
storyboard should contain enough information so that someone who hasn't read your script can
understand what's going on.

Storyboards are used by film directors as a visual language to communicate their vision to their
teams in a visual format and to collaborate with them. Storyboard artists play a critical role in
translating and visualizing the director's vision into an art form that can be used by various
production teams while also communicating important information to those teams.

There has been a great deal of discussion in recent years about how detailed the storyboards
should be created, given that a significant amount of time and money is invested in the production
process. The advancement of technology has enabled Storyboard Artists to use software to digitally
create content and plan the entire pre-production process more efficiently and effectively,
resulting in a more efficient and cost-effective production process overall. Even better, the software
applications include features that allow different teams from all over the world to connect,
collaborate, provide feedback, and manage the entire project online.

What you need to submit:

It is not necessary to create subfolders for each of the files.

1. Research and Investigations [PDF] – max 1,500 words.

 You should include an exploration of storyboards with examples for different Creative
media sectors (such as animation, film, television, and games) on how they are created.
 In the above-mentioned Creative media sectors, assess content and layout of the
storyboards discussing the use of technical details that’s communicated to production
teams.
 Assess whether these creative media sectors influence the requirements of the
storyboards.
 Critically evaluate the storyboards to determine the relationship between style and
genre and how these are expressed.

2. One-Page Project Brief [PDF]
 This document should not exceed one page.
 It should include your project’s target audience, narrative type, genre, and other
required information.

3. Pre-Production [PDF]
 Create your pre-production using industry-standard tools and techniques.
 This document should include your ideation, story, script, script breakdown, visual
development, initial rough storyboards and the final storyboards. The camera position
must be included in each storyboard panel as well.

4. Project Evaluation [PDF]

 Include evaluations of the tools and techniques you used to create your storyboards,
the technical information your storyboard communicates to production teams, and the
effectiveness of the storyboards in communicating the story.
 You must highlight the areas of your good practices and for improvement.

Your grade is assessed by your submission. To ensure that your submission meets the
requirements, you must carefully read the assessment criteria.

All submissions must be in PDF format unless a specific format is specified. While there will be no
consequences for exceeding the length of your pitch/presentation or word count, keep in mind
that precision and clarity are hallmarks of professional work. Work that is too lengthy
demonstrates a lack of professionalism.

All information sources and resources used to complete this assignment, including websites, must
be stated and correctly referenced. No credit will be given for extensive copying from information
sources, and your submitted work may be checked for plagiarism.
