Purpose: Your Christmas coloring pages have
been designed so that they are not just coloring
pages for students but they can be if you want
them too! The coloring/vocabulary pages have
been designed with a range of activities so that
you have different literacy activities to do with
your students each December.
How to: Either print off the pages you
would like your students to color in
and fashion them as a booklet or check
off the activities you will do with your
students using the pages.
I recommend that you print the 25
activities, two to a page and use as a ready
reference when planning your holiday
literacy lessons.
Printing: Print to ‘printable area’ using
your print settings if you want one per page
or print two, four, six, eight or even nine
to a page to make smaller pages,
posters or cards.

Each Christmas word is in bubble
writing for children to trace or
rainbow write the word.
Your printables have a blank section
underneath for writing or to use with
word work centers such as magnetic
letters, letter tiles or even play dough.

Print off the 25 activity ideas
by printing two to a page
and keep them handy for
your December program.
Here are some ideas for you:

1. Print each full page for children to color.
2. Print two to one page for students to
color.
3. Print one on half a
page by print two to
a page but just
selecting one page number then select
landscape. Children can write a story.

4. Print nine to a page to make small
vocabulary cards for children to color.
Children print and color.

5. Print nine to a page and make two
sets, laminate and have children play
matching games like snap, patience, go
fish or I have, who has.
Tip: Use a nail clipper to round off any sharp edges.

6. Decorate pages with various art
mediums such as; collage items, paint,
water paints, yarn, stamps, finger
painting or crayons. Have children
decide on the pages they will decorate
and with what medium(s).
7. Younger children can rainbow write
inside the word then rewrite it as many
times as you request.
8. As a class, make a list of all the songs
you know with that word. Compile a
written list by recording the songs on the

page. Sing the songs and have children
point to the word when they hear it. This
would be great for Pre-Kindergarten and
Kindergarten.
9. After reading a Christmas story that
rhymes, choose a picture and add
rhyming words around the page. This
could be a whole class, or individual
activity. Extension: Use these rhyming
words to form a short rhyming poem as a
class or in small groups.
Some Christmas books that have rhyme
include: There was an Old Woman who
Swallowed a Bell, The Night Before Christmas
or The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

10. Have children record their spelling
words, sight words, or vocabulary words
in and around their picture. Ask them to
read each word three times quickly, they
could have a partner time them for three
goes to build fluency skills.
11. Set up the pages in clear binder
sleeves for children to make the word
with magnetic letters. You could also
have them make the word with
playdough, stamp it or type it into a
Word doc.
12. Have children categorize the words
under headings such as animal, person,
place, event, food or thing. Start with
two categories and build up from there.
13. Have children research Rudolph.

the page (print two to a page, select on
page number and print landscape style).
Children can record Rudolph facts and
on the back have them finish the
sentences: Rudolph is ..., Rudolph has....,
Rudolph can....
14. Use the pages as anchor charts. You
may like to enlarge them. Brainstorm
adjectives and record them.

Have children complete the sentence
and see if they can continue with more
sentences using the adjectives.
15. Laminate the pages on colored
paper and display as a word wall. You
could also do this on white paper.
Alternatively print two to a page if you
have less wall space.
16. Print two to a page (or one) and use
the Christmas images to play ‘Which one
is Missing?’ This is an easy game that just
requires students sitting in a circle (whole
class or small groups). Place the pages
face up (start with 5-10, depending on
age). Ask one student to leave the
room. Invite a child to take away a card
(place it behind something in the room).
Invite the student back in the room. Ask
them to guess which word that is missing

and to also see if they can guess who
took it. If they guess the word and the
person correctly, they get another turn in
the same way, if not the person who took
the card gets to be the person that
leaves the room.
17. Lay all the cards face up on the
ground or if you have them visible, on a
wall that will work too. Play, ‘I’m Thinking
of a Word’. Start by saying, “I’m thinking
of a word that....... give one clue at a
time. If a child guesses it correctly, they
can be in. Keep on playing until all the
cards have been discussed. This would
be a great fill in game or conclusion
activity to your Christmas vocabulary
lesson.
18. Choose shorter words and have
children pair up. Place the pages out for

all to see. Children choose a word to
write slowly on the back of a partner with
their finger tip. They could also write the
word on the student’s forearm. The
student that is being written on has to try
and guess it. If they do, then they
become the writer. If not the writer
continues. Or, you could just have them
alternate.
19. Laminate the cards and display
them in your writing center, you might
like to print two to a page to save on
wall space.

Children write sentences in their own
story using one, two or three words from
the word wall.
20. Invite children to cut out magazine
letters to paste at the bottom of the
page to spell out the given word.
21. Children form small groups of around
5-6. Give each group an even amount
of words and lay them out on the floor.
Students take turns to throw a bean bag
on a word card that is spread out in front
of them. They then read the word
(friends in the team can help with clues,
only if they are stuck) the beanbag lands
on. They then go to the end and the
next person takes their turn. First team to
finish reading all their words, wins.

22. In teams of 4-6 students line up on
chairs (in a row, like a relay). The
Christmas posters are lined up down the
wall or board (one for each team
member) for each group. The first person
in line reads the first word, then bends
down, the second person in line reads
the next word and bends down. This
continues until the last person reads the
last words, bends down and calls out,
“Christmas” to show their team is finished.
The first team to call out, “Christmas” is
the winning team. To play again,
children shuffle to the right to play with a
new set of words. Variation – Children
each have a clipboard, paper and
pencil to write the word (as neatly as
possible) instead of reading it out loud!
23. Children play; ‘That’s my Word’. Write
a given amount of words on a piece of

paper (they will need to be able to cite
the words on the printables. All of the
Christmas printables (with text on them)
are placed in the middle of the circle (or
on the board whilst children are at their
desks). The pages should then be face-
down. One person takes turns to turn
them around slowly. If a student has the
word on their list, they cross it off (a bit
like bingo). The first person to cross off all
of their words is the winner!
24. You could also send
the pages home
and remind the
children of a few
things they could
do with them over
the holidays.

25. If you are using your printables as
coloring pages or for activities listed
above, you might like to staple them
together to use as an ongoing activity
(fast finishers, centers etc.).
