You are going to read about a five-day trip around Portugal. Match the following titles to the correct
article paragraph on page seven. Two of the titles are not needed.

Get up at the crack of dawn and head for Miradouro da Senhora do Monte - perhaps the most beautiful viewpoint
in the city. From this advanced point you get a great view of all the famous landmarks and the sprawling River
Tagus. Make your next stop the Alfama district, the oldest and most unique area of Lisbon. Within the winding
alleyways, be sure to check out Largo das Portas do Sol, a little town square with no shortage of old, worldly
charm. To round off the day, spend some time at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos - the beautiful monastery built in
1495 and the burial place of renowoned explorer, Vasco da Gama, the first person to reach India by sea.
2. Day 2:
The Palacio Nacional de Pena is one of the finest palaces in Europe. The vividly painted exterior is now matched
by the interior which has been renovated to how it appeared in 1910 when the nobility of Portugal were forced
to flee the country. Quinta da Regaleira is a 19th century villa, which possesses a mythical charm. Decorated with
elaborate pinnacles and spooky gargoyles, it is sure to leave an impression. The house itself is surrounded by a
park made up of densely packed trees which offer the perfect covering for the many tunnels that exist within the
park.
3. Day 3:
Nazaré is the perfect base to explore the monasteries of the nearby area and your first port of call should be the
Alcobaca monastery. Confirmed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, it is thought to be the first gothic*
work in Portugal. The next stop takes in one of the ‘’Seven wonders of Portugal", the Santa Maria da Vitoria which
was built to commemorate the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota and boasts a glorious limestone exterior. Finally, hit up
Tomar where you are given the opportunity to visit the Convent of Christ. Taking over five centuries to build, the
structure moulds together a number of architectural styles with its most stunning feature being its 12th century
rotunda.
4. Day 4:
If you are a fan of wine, then the renowned Douro valley may be the perfect place to guzzle your Portugese
favorites. The most enjoyable way to experience the valley is via train where you can enjoy the breathtaking,
natural views. Make sure to stop at Vila Nova de Gaia where you are able to soak in the atmosphere of the place
where the world-famous Port wine is aged and also there will be plenty of chances to have a sip of this tasty treat.
Further down the valley you come across Lamego, one of the most stunning cities in northern Portugal. It is a city
that is home to a very unique flight of steps decorated with beautiful blue and white tiles.
5. Day 5:
For your final day of this rapid tour, prepare yourself for the delights of Porto. Despite being the second largest
city in Portugal, a number of the must-see sights are all within perfect walking distance. Start with the Chapel of
Souls, a quaint church where the outer walls are covered in azulejos, the traditional blue and white tile of Portugal.
After this, take a walk to the Sao Bento Station which perhaps has the bragging rights as the most beautiful station
in the world. However, its not until you go inside that you will be left awestruck by the beauty that it beholds. One
last stop off should be the immaculate Jardins de Palacio de Cristal, a landscaped garden like no other, proudly
showing off its winding paths and flowing fountains.

While often being popular for its beautiful food or its beaches, the Algarve
is also the perfect location for those among us who love a little bit of golf. In 1966, the first

golf course was in the region but since the 1970s, different golf resorts have

sprung up in a of locations. The Vilamoura area has perhaps the greatest

of golf courses and is therefore an ideal place to tee up. The premier course

area is extremely popular all year round. It is also the base for some professional surfing
tournaments including the EDP Billabong Pro. If you are just starting out on a board then
head for Cascais which is a perfect spot for beginners. The waves here are quite small but

they are which offers you ample opportunities to practice your new hobby.

However, if you are and need a helping hand then there are plenty of surf

schools in the area with instructors ready to get you those waves sooner
rather than later.
3. Hiking in Madeira

A 90-minute flight away from Lisbon, stunning Madeira is an consisting of

panoramas that will take your breath away. The island offers a huge amount of varied terrain
