The Relationship Between English Movie-Watching Activity and

Listening Comprehension
Analysis of Situation

In learning the English language, there are four skills that must be mastered, namely
listening, speaking, writing, and reading. One aspect that is important for students to learn is
listening skills, According to Brown (2001:24), “Listening is the major component in
language learning and teaching because in the classroom learners do more listening than
speaking.” Listening is often considered the most difficult skill and many students still cannot
understand or even do not understand words or sentences spoken in English verbally by the
interlocutor so that what happens will be a misunderstanding. There are so many factors that
influence them to find it difficult to learn listening in English, such as the material is too fast
to listen to, does not recognize the meaning of words in English that are spoken or heard due
to vocabulary limitations.

These problems make it difficult for them to learn listening, so they feel lazy and
afraid when they take English lessons. According to Campbell (10:13), music can enhance a
skill’s in academics, feeling-expression, and social connection to family, community, and
culture. So the use of songs as media in teaching listening is expected to enhance and
motivate students in the learning process. They will be more interested and also they get
illustrations and new vocabulary to express their idea in English The use of songs as media to
improve students’ listening skills is also able to make students interested and motivated in the
learning process. The songs can make them more interested. So, the use of songs as media is
very helpful in improving students listening skills.

Description of Research Problem

So, based on the analysis of the situation above, there are several problems that make
it difficult for students to learn in listening class. First, the lack of connection between
teachers and students makes lessons difficult to understand, with situations like this will lead
to many errors in class as a sample there are listening activities in class, students need to
listen to songs to fill in the assignment given by the teacher, but the teacher does not pay
attention to the student's condition which results in the number of students not filling in the
assignment because the song is too fast. so that's why the connection between teacher and
students is important. The next problem is many students still lack of vocabulary, people are
different so we can't blame those who are still lacking in vocabulary. we can instead teach the
person in a more “fun” way such as making them talk a lot, or etc.

Research Focus

This research will focus on improving students' ability to understand English in

general and their vocabulary which can be helpful for improving their quality of language

Research Solution

In this research the writer will use songs as a medium to improve students’ listening
skills and the students will be relaxed and easy to understand. So, the purpose of this research
is to find out the use of English songs to improve students’ listening skills. Murphey (1990)
said many English teachers have long recognized that songs and music work well in language
classes. The statement shows that teachers can use songs as a medium to overcome the
student's difficulties in listening and improve their listening ability. A creative teacher can
also use songs to teach English through songs since they provide a break from the textbook
and workbook. It is new and interesting for them. Therefore, with this situation, they will be
motivated especially in learning listening.

Research Hypothesis

HA : There is significant effect of songs as a supported tool in listening class, The students
listening ability will be improved significantly

H0 : There is no significant effect of songs as a supported tool in listening class, the students
listening ability will not be improved significantly

Research Question

generated by site and the shared among participant, through which a specific design of test
