HOUSING CONCEPT AND DEFINITION

 Shelter is a global concept and a universal need. It is


acknowledge globally as one of the basic need of
human being; ranked as the most important after food.

 The need for shelter is as old as man as man himself.


Beginning from the stone age even till date, the need
of man for shelter cannot be underestimated.
 Irrespective of the social, economic, cultural and
political status of a man, it is imperative to have for
himself and his domestic companions, a space that
protect against inclement weather and other vices
and hazards.

What is Housing?

The process of providing functional shelter with


adequate facilities (social and physical) within a given
area, which support the daily living of individuals,
families, groups and communities activities (Wahab,
2007; Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2012; Adesanya,
2014).

 Billboard for the image of a community
 A place for work, sleep, recreation and socialisation
 The extended womb of a child
 The total environment of man

 A display of wealth, fashion, symbol of self esteem
 Most valuable asset of a man
 The first and only stronghold for combating COVID-19

TYPES OF HOUSING

 Housing based on location or setting: Rural and Urban


 Housing based on ownership structure: Private, Public,
Cooperative, Community, Condominium.
 Housing based on structure, design or layout: Single
detached, Semi detached, Multiple row, Multi-habitation
 Housing based on rental structure: Market rate/below
market rate, Income based, Subsidised.
 Housing based on internal composition: Bungalow, Low
rise, High rise.
 Housing based on building material: Wooden, Mud,
Brick, Glass
FUNCTIONS OF HOUSING

 Fulfil the physiological need of occupants by ensuring


proper temperature, adequate air and lighting, quiet
and adequate space for play and outdoor recreation.
 Guarantee fundamental psychological need of users by
providing adequate privacy, offering opportunity for
easy family life, cleanliness and aesthetic satisfaction.
 Protects users/occupants against infectious diseases
arising from poor water supply and toilet facilities
 Protects users against accidents through sound
construction, fire protection, prevention of electrical
defects, home injury and traffic hazards.
