AVOID CORROSION: Centrifuge rotors and buckets may corrode as a result of: 1.1 Marring of the surface finish 1.2 Impact to the surface 1.3 Centrifugation of corrosive products 1.4 Centrifugation in a corrosive atmosphere 1.5 Lack of periodic cleaning WARNING: Corrosion of rotors and buckets may create a safety hazard, by weakening their structural integrity. Material loss from corrosion may also result in an accessory im— balance and cause vibration at high speed CAUTION: Corrosion appears, in its first stage, as white spots on the painted or anodized surface of the rotor or buckets. The most common chemical to attack aluminum is the chloride ion, present in solutions like ammonia salts. 2. REGULAR CLEANING: Adherence to a regular program of rotor and maintenance will inhibit the process of corrosion. 2.1 Weekly cleaning of rotors and buckets requires use of warm water and a mild detergent solution. Thoroughly dry the Totor and buckets in an oven less than 80 °C. 2.2 Monthly cleaning involves the procedure described above as well as application of a thin film of silicon grease to the rotor Pins and bucket surface that mates with the pins. This silicon grease is supplied with the centrifuge accessory kit. 3. EMERGENCY CLEANING: After an accidental spill or tube break— age, immediately clean the rotor and the buckets, as described in section 2.1 3.1 Insert cleaning is accomplished by lifting each segment of the insert and scrubbing with a bottle brush. Use only a mild deter— gent solution and dry with a clean absorb— ant towel. 3.2 Cushion cleaning is required after any spillage or glass breakage. Remove the rubber cushion and clean thoroughly. CAUTION: If an insert cushion cannot be thoroughly cleaned of broken glass, replace with a new cushion before re— using the insert. REV: 0793 ~ MANUAL LID OPENING —_| — When power is removed from the centrifuge, and access to the rotor chamber is required, the centrifuge lid can be opened manually. — Locate a small screwdriver or a T—handle allen wrench in your black tool case. — Without handling the lid at all, insert the screwdriver or T—handle allen wrench into the lid bypass hole located in the top front corner on the left side of the centrifuge. — Push the screwdriver of T—handle allen wrench until the lid opens. — Remove the screwdriver or T—handle allen wrench after opening the lid. Cover locking is detected by two microswitches (6, fig. 6.12 /6.22/ 63.2 / 6.4.2) ‘The rotor-drive motor is controlled by power electronics integrated on the principal card “The cooling system is built around a compressor (2, fig. 6.1.3 | 6.3.3) and a fan (3, fig. 6.1.3 J 6.3.3) and a condensor (5, fig. 6.1.3 / 6.3.3) 2.2 - OPERATING PRINCIPE (see figures in section 7) - General ‘The rotor-drive motor is a series type DC motor, During centrifuging the motor is supplied with a DC voltage derived from the AC mains via a half- controlled converter of diodes and thyristors. During braking the motor armature is switched to a braking sesistor and the field coil cording to the LED (Brake) s enrgized or not ac ‘The main board controlled electronics handle the following tasks ~ control of operating modes, = servocontrol of motor rpm by control of the thyristors’ firing angle, ~ braking control (by inertia and by switching the motor armature to a fixed-value resistor), = active protection (current limiting, lid interlock, zero speed detection, imbalance und motor overheating), = management of the control module (keyboard), = rotor chamber temperature regulation by activating the cooling system, ~ Management of the running time ca 2.2.2 « Controls ‘The control features consist of the flexible keyboard, = the display and indicator lights, ~ the potentiometer and the timer, The indicator lights, supported by the “Display” card, are controlled from the Principal card. 223+ Principal card 2.2.3.1 - General ‘The Principal card contains analog motor control circuits (current control and generation of the thy- ristor gate pulses) and pulse-to-mains synchronizing circuits. 2.2.3.2 - Principal card functions cM The Principal card handles the following functions : 1) Placing motor in service ‘The motor is switched to the supply bridge by the relay KR. If the absence of a command and in the event of a malfunction, the motor armature is switched to the braking resistor. 2 Motor speed control and current limiting A tachometer sensor coupled to the motor delivers a signal whose frequency (f = N/15) is a submultiple of the motor speed N (rpm), Variation of motor, based on the detected speed, is obtained by changing the firing angles of the thyristors (analog loop), ‘The current is limited to prevent overcurrent in the motor, by a custent transformer, according to the measured line current. 3 Braking control Changeover to “braking” mode is controlled by the microprocessor, which commands cancellation of the motor current (approximately 2 seconds), then switching of relay KR. According to the curve selected, different combinations of "resistive braking” or “inertial braking” will be applied, During braking the motor armature delivers current in the brake resistor, depending on the case, the motor field is energized or not via the Principal card, ‘Switching of KR. 4) Cover unlatching Lid unlatching is possible only when the LED "LID" is ON, “% In this case, when we press "LU a wise and an opto «isc. key, THE LID electro magnet will be energized by means of 5) Compressor control The cooling system is designed to prevent heating of the chamber air the heat of motor rotation. Refrigeration is provided by 2 freon R 500 system ‘This system comprises two parts = a High Pressure stage (compressor, condenser and filter), = a Low Pressure stage (evaporator surrounding the chamber, LP hand valve of compressor). ‘The compressor is actuated by the Principal card when the measured temperature in the chamber overshoots the set point, by as little as 0.5°. The compressor ON command is sent via an opto- wwiac and a triac. In normal operation, the pressure at the LP hand valve is approximately 1.4 bar, 6 Protective features ‘The centrifuge motor is automatically commanded to stop whenever any of the following faults occurs : = imbalance (unevenly distributed load), = motor overheating, = 10 cancel the imbalance memory it is necessary to switch off the main switch. cai st 4 - "Display" card It contains + The four digits display with its command cireuit (time base and counter) = The LEDS - Power supplies ‘The centrifuge is powered from the mains voltage, either 220 V / 50 Hz or 60 Hz, +120 V / 60 Hz Overall protection is provided by a circuit breaker. cna CHAPTER 3 TROUBLESHOOTING WARNING : There are hazardous voltages present at several points where servicing may be required. Proceed with extreme caution when troubleshoot 3.1 - GENERAL Use a voltmeter capable of measuring up to 250 VAC and 250 VDC to troubleshoot the CR4-12, C4-12, R3-12 and the C3-12.
