LAB 03: Building 2 device Network using a

Switch

Objectives: Marks: 10
Learning Objectives
• Learn about switch and its types
• Learn how to build two device network using a Switch
• Learn how to communicate between two devices using a Switch
Introduction to Switch:
1. A network switch connects devices in a network to each other, enabling them to talk by
exchanging data packets.
2. Use for making a LAN and have a multiple port for Ethernet connection
3. Detects the specific devices connected to it because it keeps the MAC(Physical) address
of those devices.
4. Is an intelligent device
5. Packet transfer to the specific computer
6. Reduce traffic on LAN
7. Not able to read IP addresses
8. A LAN switch operates at the data link layer.

Types:
1. Un-Managed Switches:
Unmanaged switches are designed to just plug in and run, with no settings to configure.
These are fine to use in small networks with only basic needs.
2. Managed switches:
Managed Switches are fully configurable, customizable and provide a range of data on
performance. Those attributes make them more suitable for larger networks and networks
supporting critical activities.

Building 2 device Network using a Switch:

Step1: Click on End Devices icon, select and drag 2 PC’s on the screen.
Step2: Now click on the switches icon from the bottom left menu and drag a switch to the work
area.
Step3: Now select the Flash Icon which is for connection from the bottom left menu and then
click on the automatically select connection type icon. While the connection type being selected
click on PC1 and then Switch1 and repeat this step for PC2.
Step4: Assign IP Addresses to both PC1 and PC2. For IP Configuration click on PC1, a new
window will open with tabs/buttons at the top, click on “Desktop” and s
elect “IP Configuration” from the new window. Enter 192.168.1.2 in the IP Address field and
click on the subnet mask it will automatically populate with 255.255.255.0, close this window
and repeat this for PC2 with different IP Address e.g. 192.168.1.3
Step5: Checking Network Connectivity:
Now click on PC1 and select the command prompt. As we know that PC2 has the IP address of
192.168.1.3 so we will enter “ping 192.168.1.3” at the command prompt and wait for the result.
Note: If you found any issue in the below topologies, then fix the issue? Fix and rebuild. Also
mention the issue in submission. Lastly assume /24 subnet mask for both assignments

Assignment 1: Build and test below topology

Assignment2: Build below topology and send a test message from PC0 to Laptop0
