Topic: Cultural Heritage

 Every society has a cultural heritage


 These are ways of living of the society that are inherited from the past
 They are passed down from one generation to the next
 How we interact with our family and friends comes from our cultural heritage

Friendship
What is friendship?

 A type of voluntary relationship between people who care about each other
 A friend is a person who you play, share ideas and help each other
 Friends are there when you need them
 Friends for different occasions or situations / purposes
We need friends when: helping people in need
 Playing games
 Making toys
 Doing our school work
 We are I problems

Qualities of a good friend

 When looking for a friend you must not expect to find someone who is perfect
 Everyone has different talents and ideas
 It is normal that friends have arguments or disagreements  Friends should
tell each other how they feel  A good friend is someone who is:
• Loving
• Helpful
• Honest
• Caring
• Kind
• Loyal

Family relations
 Families are made up of different people
 People from your family are called family relations
 You are connected to these people by birth, marriage or adoption

Family ceremonies and rituals

 Families hold ceremonies


 Ceremonies are events held to celebrate a particular occasion
 Families celebrates events like birth, marriage and death
 Families also observe certain rituals
 Rituals are sacred customary ways of celebrating culture or religion  Different
communities have different ritual practices

Birth

 When a child is born ululating is done to show joy and happiness


 It is also a sign of welcoming the new born baby
 The bay stays indoors for a least a week
 This is done to protect the child from diseases and direct sunlight
 Some people bury umbilical code (rukuvhute/imbeleko) at the child’s place of
origin
 After a month a welcoming feast is done
 The person who names the baby pay a token for the name to be accepted
 The mother to inform elders of each stage of development the child gets to
 These stages include sitting, crawling, teething, standing and walking

Funerals

 In some area’s money is paid it the headman telling him about death in the
family
 If a woman dies the husband or relatives also give money to her relatives (
Kusuma in Shona)
 The body of the adult lies in the house for one night before burial
 If the body is kept for more than a night, a fine is paid to the headman
 Rituals are done to hand over the spirit of the dead person to ancestors
 In some areas, the body comes through a hole drilled in the wall
 When taking the body for burial site, relatives sweep the path and rest the body
 A reed mat (bonde/icansi) is placed in the grave by close relatives

Marriages

 When a man and woman want to marry, they go to an aunt or an uncle and
exchange love tokens (nhumbi)
 They take each other to their close relatives for introductions
 Money and cattle are used in the payment of lobola (bride prize) by the man
 The mother and aunt of the bride (mwenge/umtshakazi) prepare kitchen utensils
and bedroom items which are taken but the bride to her husband
 The aunts and sisters accompany the bride to the husband’s home

 Children play games
 Some of the games are good while others are bad
 Good games teach cultural norms and values
