DEMOGRAPHIC QUESTIONS

❑ allow researchers to gain background information on their

participants
❑ provide context for the collected survey data, allowing researchers
to describe their participants and better analyze their data
❑ may explore participant’s age, gender, race, ethnicity, education,
and employment
❑ sometimes can include any background characteristics that a
researcher believes are essential to the research project

Slide 4
DEMOGRAPHIC QUESTIONS

➢When creating a survey, a researcher needs to make decisions

about which demographic questions to ask and how to ask them
in a way that recognizes the potentially sensitive nature of the
information sought.
➢Classic demographic questions ask for information like age,
gender, and occupation.
➢They can even ask for the respondent’s relationship status

Slide 5 IMPORTANCE OF DEMOGRAPHIC

QUESTIONS IN SURVEYS

❑ In business, demographic questions help business develop

accurate buyer personas. Buyer personas may influence
marketing campaigns, sales tactics, and how to provide
customer service. The more accurate on their personas are,
the better to understand customers' needs and values.
Slide 6 IMPORTANCE OF DEMOGRAPHIC
QUESTIONS IN SURVEYS

❑In research, they can be very useful especially if the study is

on the correlation of variables. The age, economic status,
gender, and education might be a factor that could influence
the other variables in the study, hence; you should know
when to include demographic questions in a questionnaire.

Slide 7 WHEN TO INCLUDE DEMOGRAPHIC

QUESTIONS?

➢If you are a restaurant manager wondering how to tweak a

crème brûlée recipe, maybe it does not matter if it was a 40-year
old marketer or a 14-year old student who said they loved it.

However, if you are the Head of HR and want to find out

the age or gender balance of the office, it might be a good idea to
dig a little.

QUESTIONS?

➢ So, before you start asking for potentially

sensitive information, ask yourself: do I really
need this information, or am I just including it
because that is what forms and surveys normally
do?

REMEMBER

➢As a researcher collecting data from his/her respondents, it is

important to always include the option “Prefer not to say” in order
not to intimidate them in answering the rest of the survey questions.

➢This is part of research etiquette that researchers should know.

➢There may be other people who do not want to reveal their actual
employment status and are not comfortable in giving answers to the
question.
