Temperature Snake

This pattern is inspired by „The Boa Snake“ by Lisa Sommers (on

ravelry) please go check out their pattern because I’ll refer to
some parts of it here.
https://ravel.me/crochet-boa-snake

-I don’t have permission (an answer) if can refer to another pattern

like this, but to me it seems fine this way?

Materials:
 Whatever yarn you like + corresponding hook :) (I used 4/8 friends cotton by
hobbii (weight 1 super fine)) and a 2mm hook
 A smaller hook and yarn for the tongue (I used a 1mm crochet hook and red
crochet thread)
 Safety eyes (or embroider the eyes, use felt etc.) (I used 6mm safety eyes)
 Polyfill or other filling material
 Yarn needle
 Stitch marker

Abbreviations:
 R x: row number x
 sc: single crochet
 mr: magic ring
 inc: increase
 dec: (invisible) decrease
 slst: slip stitch
 st: stitch
 f/o fasten o
 (…) * n: repeat … n times
 (n) total stitch count per sound: n stitches
 standing sc: standing single crochet (you can search for YouTube tutorial or:
make a slip knot, then just sc (that’s my way of explaining))
 invisible join: after f/o take your yarn, a yarn needle and trace the top of next
stitch to create a seamless round join
Pattern
Tongue:
slip knot leave a tail to secure, ch 13: starting in 2nd ch from hook, slst 5, ch 6: starting in
2nd ch from hook, slst 5, then in the remaining 7 ch (from 12 ch) slst 7, f/o and leave a
tail to secure later.
-you may want to adjust the ch 13 and the remaining ch part and make a shorter or
longer tongue depending on how big your snake head & body is

Head:
R1: in mr sc 6 (6)
R2: inc 6 (12)
R3-4: sc 12 (12)
I would attach the tongue now:
bring the two ends through the middle of the mr or between R1 and R2 right where your
end of the round is (so the tongue ends up slightly below the tip of the snout)
Then using a yarn needle: secure the ends by tying a knot around a loop of a nearby
stitch.
R5: (sc inc) *6 (18) After R10
my snek
R6-8: sc 18 (18)
looks like
R9: (sc inc sc) *6 (24) this:

R10: sc 24 (24)
And now, that you are at 24 sc, go and check out the snake pattern I got inspired by:
https://ravel.me/crochet-boa-snake
I just continue R11 and R12 of the linked pattern, after that I do 4 rounds of 36 sc, then
R23 and R24 of the linked pattern (you now did R11-R18) and then back to my pattern:
R 19: sc 29, slst, f/o, then invisible join by tracing the first st of this round (30)
Now add your eyes (I place my safety eyes 8 or 9 st apart between R11 and R12, make
sure you place them according to the head shape, in a way, that the flat part is the snake
belly)
And stu your snake head.
<- It will even out after <- Eye placement &
a couple rounds of the final head shape.
snake body.

The Temperature Part

Now it’s time to look at the temperature range for the location you want to make this
snake for (or what moods you want to include for a mood snake).
I’m doing a snake for the middle of Germany. Temperatures range from – 5°C to 35°C,
because I use both the min and max temperature every day, I use this full range.
I do a total of 22 colors: and idk why I did the negative temp part this way, probably just
do -2 -4 and < -5 for more equal temp steps.
As said before, I’m doing a 2mm hook and hobbii friends cotton 4/8, the numbers in
second row represent the color number.
<= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <= <=
-5 -3 -1 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 32 34 35<
01 63 73 70 85 93 91 90 94 105 103 104 108 22 24 26 33 16 40 43 48 47

Now pick your own colors, make sure the ones close to each other have at least a little
contrast, so your stripes won’t disappear (and btw. less colors = less yarn cost lol)
You can note your temperatures and corresponding colors here:

I don’t have a template to note down the daily temp, but you need to keep track in some
way.

Body:
Sooo it’s time to do your beautiful stripes (one or two colors a day, or at whatever
interval you like)
R: start with a standing sc, sc 29, then f/o, invisible join to the standing sc. Secure your
ends with a knot plz (30)
Stu the snake little by little as you like, every couple days or something
Tail:
This part will be done at some point in the future. But here is my basic idea:
probably just over the last 12 days (last 24 rows) I’ll add a dec somewhere in the round,
then at the end, a round is 6 st and then you f/o and sew it shut.
