Course Purpose
To introduce Corporate Communication students to the management function.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit the learner should be able to:
1. Define the concept of management and discuss why organizations are needed, why
managers are necessary, and why management is a challenge.
2. Discuss the key areas in management including planning, decision making, and staffing
and human resource management.
3. Utilize communication process for management
Address management issues as a Corporate Communications officer

Main Examination Objectives

Tests participants understanding of key Principles of Management concepts and how to apply
them real situation.

The main exam will be two hour in a class sitting.

The exam will cover the subject matter of entire syllabus.

The exam will have two (2) sections: Section one will be compulsory question. Section two will
consist of three questions or more from which the students will select two (2) or as otherwise
instructed.

Revision
 Plan a timetable for revision. By doing this you will revise more thoroughly
 Don't cram the night before if you don't know it now you never will!
 Look at your refresher notes on the day, keep them simple and clear
 Tackle fear of failure, think positively.

How to tackle the examination


 Read the examination instructions very carefully. i.e those on the exam answer booklet
and those on the question paper.
 Be sure about how many questions are to be answered and which are compulsory

 Check the time allocation and make sure you allocate time to tackle the full number of
questions
 Answers are required to be presented in a format that is clear and presentable manner that
is essential to gain good marks.
 Convince the examiner you know your topic don’t not assume that the examiner will
know what you really meant.
 Give practical examples as much as possible in order to demonstrate your understanding
of the subject/ concepts.
 Be neat and clear and keep the examiner interested in examining your work.
 Remember to indicate your registration or admission number in full in the answer booklet
and other details as dictated in the exam booklet.
 Avoid anything that has relation to the exam or that could be an insinuation of an
intention to cheat or undertaking actual cheating i.e mobile phones.
Teaching Methodology: The class will be taught through lectures, class discussions, group
discussions and tutorials. Class participation and group discussions will be an important
component of the learning experience.

Instructional Materials:

The recommended instructional materials for this course include the following:
Handouts, Text books, Chalk/white board marker
Attendance –You are expected to attend all scheduled classes. Failure to attend a cat or submit
assignments should be made to the lecturer in advance.

Participation- One of the critical factors in making this course a successful experience for
everyone is quality of student participation. Thus you are expected to read all handouts and
reading assignments before class and contribute to class discussions.

Often, the most complete understanding of the best solutions for important issues and challenges
emerge only after substantial class debate and discussion.

Assignments: All assignments should be typed, and appropriately formatted i.e. font phase;
times new Roman, font size; 12, spacing 1.5 and justified. All assignments must be referenced
using the APA format.
