APPLICABLE AIRCRAFT: This OTT is applicable to A300, A300-600, A310, A318, A319, A320,
A321, A330, A340, A340-500, A340-600, A350, A380 and AST.
1. PURPOSE
This OTT provides training recommendations to Operators and Approved Training Organizations
(ATOs) in order to mitigate risks associated with unreliable airspeed events at take-off.
2. DESCRIPTION
Following aircraft parking or storage, several events of unreliable airspeed indication during take-off
have been reported to Airbus. The training recommendations published in this OTT are the result of
the analysis of these unreliable airspeed events at take-off. The training recommendations detailed in
paragraph 4.4 should be considered as training guidelines for operators to develop their own training.
Syllabus designers are reminded the risks of negative training that can be caused by scenarios based
on unrealistic failures combinations or scenarios crossing FFS representativeness boundaries.
3. DOCUMENTATION
The Airbus Flight Crew Training Standards (FCTS) Manuals will be updated in April 2021 to integrate
the training recommendation published in the present OTT.
4. TRAINING RECOMMENDATION
The ICAO PANS-Training (Doc 9868) and the ICAO Manual of Evidence-based Training (Doc 9995)
provide the competency framework for aeroplanes pilots. The concept of the Pilot Competencies has
been adopted in the different Airbus training programs (Flight Crew Training Program - FCTP) and
training manuals (Flight Crew Training Standards - FCTS Manuals).
The pilot competencies are commonly recognized as efficient barriers to manage threats and errors.
The present training recommendations are therefore based on the pilot competencies that have been
identified as critical in safely managing the threats associated with unreliable airspeed at take-off.

OPERATIONS TRAINING TRANSMISSION - OTT
The training items described in paragraph 4.4 below, address the following pilot competencies for the
prevention, the recognition and the management of unreliable airspeed events at take-off:
- Application of procedure
- Knowledge
- Situation awareness
- Communication
- Leadership and teamwork
- Problem solving and decision making
The training items detailed in paragraph 4.4 should be addressed during a briefing with an instructor
or covered through a dedicated support (Computer based training with an animated presentation,
video). In addition to the documents referenced in paragraph 4.4 below, the information contained in
the following supports can be used for illustration:
These videos are available on airbus-win.com and on the Airbus WIN app for IOS and
Android devices.
This article is available on safetyfirst.airbus.com and on the Safety first app for iOS and
Android devices.
Airbus recommends to address the following briefing items at the next recurrent training opportunity.
Training organizations are recommended to verify that training syllabus, training media and instructor
guidelines used in Type Rating or Cross Crew Qualification trainings are compatible with the present
OTT.

To facilitate instructing and to develop pilot’s competencies in an optimum way, the training items
proposed in paragraph 4.4 above use a set of different teaching methods. These methods are
suggested for the conduct of the training.
- Facilitate: The instructor uses effective questioning, listening and a non-judgemental approach in
order to enable the trainees to acquire and develop competencies. This teaching method is
particularly effective in developing skills and attitudes, assisting trainees to develop insight and their
own solutions and resulting in better understanding, retention and commitment.
- Explain: The instructor provides information verbally to the trainees or (whenever facilitation seems
not suitable in particular circumstances) recalls/reminds them the key points already acquired.
Questions are used to either establish current knowledge or to check understanding.
