QUESTION 1
A steel brake rod is 1.2m long and is subjected to a maximum load of 4.5kn. If the
extension of the rod is not exceeding 0.384mm, determine :
a) The maximum stress produced in the rod.
b) Suitable diameter of the load. [10]

QUESTION 2
The main journal bearings of an engine’s crankshaft carry a total load of 10kn when the
engine speed is 3500rev/min. If the coefficient of friction between each bearing and shaft
is 0.015 and the diameter of the shaft is 60mm, calculate
a) The frictional torque on the shaft.
b) The power absorbed by friction.
c) The heat energy generated in the bearings per minute. [10]
QUESTION 3
A cast-iron column of hollow cross-section has an outside diameter of 150mm and is
used to support a load of 70kn. If the average compressive stress produced in the metal is
7140kpa, calculate the inside diameter of the column. [10]
