Figure 1: GSM COMMANDER GM2
1 DESCRIPTION

GSM KOMANDER GM2 is used to set remote controlled devices using GSM network as well
as for acquiring digital data at the input and sending SMS messages on changes occurring
at digital inputs. GSM COMMANDER GM2 can be used to turn on / off two electrical
devices and monitor the status of two digital inputs via a mobile phone. In addition to
the GSM COMMANDER GM2, a SIM card for network operator (GSM 900 / 1800 MHz) is
required. Its typical application is turning on /off electrical devices as well as generating
alert messages (SMS), collecting information from door sensors, movement sensors,
temperature sensors, liquid level sensors, etc...

GSM commander GM2 also allows:

turning the device on /off with delay
turning on /off the alert function
turning on /off the functions of confirming commands

Contents:
In addition to the GSM COMMANDER GM2 you have also obtained the:
Antenna
Basic instructions manual

For the proper functioning of the GSM COMMANDER GM2 you will also need:
a valid and properly configured SIM card
sufficient level of GSM signal of the corresponding operator
main power supply
battery backup (option). In case of battery powered supply (i.e. lead battery), the
latter is charged by means of GSM COMMANDER GM2 when it is connected to the main
power supply.
2 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION

2.1 Mode of Operation

GSM KOMANDER GM2 is connected to standard mains voltage 230VAC 50/60Hz. Two built-in
relays allow the control of electrical devices whose individual consumption must not exceed
200VA. If this requirement is not met, the module can be used indirectly to turn on / off
the external contactor of adequate capacity. For its operation the GSM COMMANDER GM2
requires the identical SIM card as used in GSM phones, but it must be properly configured.
Pin verification must be DISABLED. After connecting it to the main power supply, the GSM
COMMANDER GM2 tries to connect to the GSM network. Once the device is successfully
connected to the GSM network, the status LED starts to flash. In the event of problems
follow the instructions in Chapter Troubleshooting of the detailed instructions manual
available on our website.

2.2 Setting the SIM Card

To disable PIN checking any mobile phone can be used. The instructions for changing PIN
settings are described in the mobile phones guidelines. Inserting the SIM card: The SIM
card holder can be found next to the antenna connector. Before installing the SIM card
open the casing of the holder, if any, (its shape prevents incorrect insertion of the card).
If the holder has no casing, it is necessary to orientate the SIM card as shown on the label
(see figure below).
Before inserting the SIM card into GSM COMMANDER GM2, the main power supply
must be turned off.
Figure 2: Inserting the SIM card

2.3 Protection against the Unauthorised Use of SMS Commands

Once the GSM COMMANDER GM2 is working properly, it can receive SMS commands from any
GSM phone, provided the phone number is stored on the SIM card of the GSM COMMANDER.
This will enable the use of SMS commands (turning on / off devices, etc.).

Note:
If we want to allow a certain person to execute SMS commands, we store it to any place in
the phone book on the SIM card under addresses between 4 and 200. The instructions on
saving phone numbers to the SIM card can be found in the mobile phone instructions. More
demanding users can store telephone numbers using a personal computer for which the
appropriate connection cable and the communications programme are required. (detailed
information is available by the manufacturer)
Figure 3: Organization of the telephone book on the SIM card

The yellow area indicates the stored addresses of users that are allowed to operate the
GSM COMMANDER GM2. For the red area see Chapter 2.5 Alerting.
IMPORTANT NOTE: THE NAME ENTRY INTO THE PHONE BOOK DIRECTORY MUST HAVE AT
LEAST THREE CHARACTERS.

2.4 SMS Commands

GSM COMMANDER GM2 carries out the appropriate command on the basis of a received SMS
message. The command can be refused if the sender is not authorised. (See chapter 2.3
Protection against the unauthorised use)

SMS commands (no round brackets):

Start the device: SMS message [ v1 ]* is sent to the phone number of the module. The status of
the device is confirmed by a return SMS message [Device1 is ON] to the GSM phone number**.
Stop the device: SMS message [ i1 ]* is sent to the phone number of the module. The
status of the device is confirmed by a return SMS message [Device1 is OFF] to the GSM

entire base time is 40 sec.

no SIM card inserted low GSM signal normal mode of operation

If the status LED does not blink at the start, check if the GSM COMMANDER GM2 is
correctly connected to the power supply.
If the status LED blinks once and then goes out, the problem is either the incorrect
insertion of the SIM card or PIN checking which has not been disabled. For help, see
paragraph 2.2 Setting a SIM card.
If the status LED first blinks and then stays on, the problem is in the connection to the
GSM network. Check if the antenna is properly connected, also check the level of GSM
signal using a mobile phone.
