Reasons:
• When deciding what kind of employer, you would like
to work for
• When you are ready to apply for jobs
• When you are interviewing, and you are interviewing,
and your knowledge of the company is required

4
Look for companies that share your values
Other than pay and benefits, 43% of candidates say they are
attracted to a new job because of meaningful work. ¹ By
researching a company’s core mission, you’re not only ensuring
they have clear goals, but ones that resonate with your interests
and passions.

If you value social causes, diversity initiatives or innovation,

choose a company that aligns with these.

Discussion
5 What are your values and what company values are
important to you?
Research employee benefits that the company provides
To attract potential employees, companies often disclose healthcare
benefits and other perks, including stock options, flexible work
schedules, or unique onsite facilities that may include gyms or
catered cafeterias.

6
Six most-desirable benefits for employees

The terms “perks” and “benefits” are sometimes used

interchangeably, but for our purposes, benefits for
employees are generally a form of non-cash
compensation that cover basic needs. If not offered by
the employer, employees would likely have to fund
them on their own.

• Paid time off

• Extended Health insurance
• Retirement savings plans
• Dental insurance
• Disability insurance
• Vision insurance

Perks at work employees want most

Perks — as in perquisites or corporate perks — are

nice-to-have additions to an employee’s salary and
benefits package. We define perks at work as above-
and-beyond offerings that may sway an employee to
value one employer over another. Think of them as
icing on the cake.

• Remote work options

• Flexible work schedules
• Employee discounts
• Company-subsidized meals or snacks
• Volunteer time off

8
9
Learn about the company’s business operations

• How does the company make money? Who buys their

products or services and are they highly rated?
• Is it a start up?
• What industry is the company in?

The answers to these question will give you an idea of

how stable the business is, what some of their
immediate concerns might be and how you could play a
part in their success.

What else would you want to learn about the company’s

business?
10
Compose a List of Questions

First, create a list of the questions you want to answer when

researching the company and its employer brand. Here are a
few sample questions of what you’ll want to answer:

•Who is the CEO?

•Why was the company founded and when?
•Where are they located?
•What products or services do they sell?
•What sets them apart from the competition?
•What is the company’s mission statement?
•What is the company culture like?
11
Research the company’s leadership

When a company captures your interest, you

should know who is leading the way.
• Research the employees in key positions
within the company by reading the ‘About Us”
page and employees bios on the company’s
webpage.

• Seek out the social media profiles of executives

and department directors—What are their
posts like? Are they proud to represent the
brand or work in this industry? Some
company leaders may have been interviewed or
written books and articles that give you insight
into their thinking.
12
Expand your research to news and recent events

A company’s website, blog, and social media are

great ways to learn about a company, but you’ll also
want to get an external perspective.

Search for general news coverage and specific

industry publications for recent updates about the
company and its competitors. Scanning customer
forums and product reviews can also help you gauge
a company’s or their products’ reputation.

13
Ask your network for opinions

Seek opinions from trusted, reliable friends and

associates. After you’ve done your research, discuss
what you’ve learned with your network.

Ask people you know for the inside scoop on their own
company’s culture and if there are opportunities.

If you’re a recent college graduate building your

network from scratch, ask university advisors for
names of alumni working at your target companies.
Consider reaching out to these people for a quick
coffee.

14
What does the company seem to value the most?

Is it….

Leadership
Teamwork
Youth
Experience
Social Responsibility
Environmental Issues
Trust
Respect
Standards
Customer –centric
Community
Innovation
Inclusion
Diversity & Inclusion
15
Why are company values important?

From a business perspective, having a core set of

company values makes it easier for a company to
make decisions, foster teamwork and help
employees collaborate, quickly communicate
principles to clients and customers, and hire
employees with the right attitude.

Search tips:
Start your search by picking a category such as
city. Then add more categories one at a time to reduce
your results to a useful and more specific results list.
• Select the category by clicking on it and select term(s)
e.g. you may want to limit it to a specific business
type or limit it to companies with more than 500
employees. After you add each limiter, click on
Search. Then continue to design your search by using
the categories on the left until you are satisfied.
• If you get too few search results, click on "search
criteria used" to see what limiters you have set. You
can tweak your search here by clicking on the
garbage can to get rid of that limiter.

How to decide between two job offers from two
different companies?

Receiving multiple job offers can be both exciting and

stressful. Most people send out applications for many
different positions during the process of searching for
a new job, which can sometimes result in several
companies competing for the same candidate.

Even when job offers have similar benefits and duties,

many other aspects can influence your choice.
Selecting the job that will bring you the most
satisfaction and fit in best with your goals is an
important decision that should only be made after
carefully considering each option.

33
Evaluation Criteria –Things to Consider

• What skills will this opportunity build?

• What is the career progression offered and does it fit with my goals?
• What will I be doing during the first month, six months?
• What do I like most about this role?
• What do I like least about the role?
• How closely does this role align with my ideal job?
• How does this role position me toward my long-term ultimate-job goal?
• Do my values and philosophies align with those of the organization?
• What opportunities exist to learn and grow?
• What is the level of intensity I can expect from the position?
• What is the degree of team and individual work in this role?
• What is a typical day, week for this position?
• What are the key success factors for the role?

Anything Else????
