Epidemiology
Bacterial conjunctivitis

common in adults ● Redness
● discharge in one eye- yellow,
•Streptococcus white, green

which reappears within minutes
•Haemophilus influenzae of wiping
•Moraxella catarrhalis ● spread by direct contact and their
secretions or with contaminated
objects and surfaces

Viral conjunctivitis

● Adenovirus ● watery or mucoserous

● highly contagious discharge,
● The second eye usually ● a burning, sandy,
becomes involved within 24
● gritty feeling in one eye.

● The tarsal conjunctiva -
"bumpy" appearance
Treatment

❖ Preventing contagion
❖ Specific therapy - bacterial conjunctivitis
❖ Viral conjunctivitis- symptomatic therapy
 Viral conjunctivitis therapy

● naphazoline-pheniramine, ketotifen

● Warm or cool compresses

● Systemic antibiotic and antiviral therapies play no role
