INTRODUCTION

• Blepharitis is a chronic inflammatory process


of the eyelid margin.It is a common eye
disorder throughout the world and can affect
any age group.
DEFINITION

• Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid where


the eyelashes grow and affects both eyelid.
• It is a common eye disorder caused by either
bacterial or a skin condition such as dandruff of
the scalp.
INCIDENCE

• The onset of blepharitis usually occurs


between the age of six to ten years.
CAUSES

 Bacterial eyelid infection mostly causes by


staphylococcal.
 Dry eyes.

 Fungal eyelid infection(Zygomycota,Basidiomycota).


 Parasites( Protozoa, Lice , etc
 Other skin condition such as acne and dandruff in
scalp.
Blepharitis is classified into two types

1) According to anatomical involved:


• Anterior blepharitis occurs at the outside front edge
of the eyelid where the eyelashes are attached.
• Posterior blepharitis affects the inner edge of the
eyelid that comes in contact with the eyeball.

2) According to organism.
• Bacterial blepharitis(ulcerative):usually caused by
staphylococi.
• Seborrhoeic or squamus: usually associated with
dandruff.

• Mixed staphylococcal with seborrhoeic


blepharitis.
• Parasitic blepharitis associated with infestation
by lice(head louse).
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

• Redness of the eyelid.


• Flaking of skin on the eyelids.

• Crusting at the lid margins,this is generally worse


on waking .
• Cysts at the lid margin.
• Red eye

• Itching,irritation and burning as well as a
foreign body sensation
• Eye dryness.
• Reduce vision
• Other symptoms include sensitivity to
light,eyelashes that grow abnormally or even
loss of eyelashes.

Diagnosis
i. Patient history.
ii. Comprehensive medical eye evaluation.
iii. Examination of the eye
-visual acquity
-External eye examination
-Silt lamp biomicroscopy
iv. Measurement of intraocular pressure.
v. Diagnostic tests
-cultures of the eyelid margins.
-Eyelid biopsy.
MANAGEMENT

1. Medical management
 Eyelid hygiene:-It includes warm compress, eyelid
massage and eyelid scrub with wet wash cloth.
 Topical antibiotic:- To provide symptomatic relief
and in eradicating bacteria from eyelid margin.

• Topic Steroids:-It provides symptomatic relief


incases with significant ocular inflammation.

2. Surgical management
 Surgical management for
blepharitis is required
only for complication
such as chalazion,
ectropian, entropian or
corneal disease.

Treatment

 Washing with warm water.

 Applying antibiotic like,

Gentamycin, Ciprofloxacin, Dexycycline eye


drops and 1percent tetracycline ointment at bed
time.

• Provide parents with instructions on how to
administer eye drops.
• Experience changes in the vision immediate
need to consult doctor.
Nursing intervention

• Assess the general condition of the patient.

• Provide education to the care of blepharitis &eye care.

• Instruct the patient about hygiene,

Eg:-frequent washing of hands & not


rubbing/touching eyes.
• Reassure the patient that the condition is self limiting.
Prevention
• Keeping your hand and face clean.
• Avoiding rubbing your eyes with dirty fingers ,a
soiled handkerchief.
• Removing all eye makeup before bed time.

• Wiping any excess tear or eye drops from your


eyelashes.
