Assignment 1: Properties of Discrete Random Variable

Instruction: Determine whether a given table is a probability distribution or not. Write Discrete Probability
Distribution if the table satisfies the two conditions of probability distribution and Not Discrete Probability
Distribution if not. For cases that show a not discrete probability distribution,

__________ 1. x 0 1 2 3
P(x ) 4 /35 18/35 12/35 1/35

__________ 2. x −3 1 2 3
P(x ) 2/9 1/9 5/9 1/9

__________ 3. x 1 2 3 4 5
P(x ) 0.01 0.03 0.4 0.27 0.69

Assignment 2: Mean and Variance of Discrete Random Variable

Instruction: Solve the following problems.

1. The random variable X represents the number of taxi cabs a doctor meets on his way to the hospital. The
probability distribution of X is shown below.

X 0 1 2 3 4 5
P( X) 0.01 0.15 0.20 0.25 0.30 0.09
Calculate the mean, variance and standard deviation of this probability distribution. Give a brief interpretation of
the value of the mean.

2. A bank vice president feels that each savings account customers has, on average, three credit card. The following
distribution represent the number of credit cards people own. Find the mean, variance and standard deviation. Is
the vice president correct?

3. The officer of the Math Club are planning to sell 125 tickets to be raffled during the school’s foundation day. One
ticket will win Php 2000 and the other tickets will win nothing. If you will buy one ticket, what will be your
expected gain?

4. Gavin tosses an unbiased coin. He receives Php 100 if the head appears and pays Php 40 if a tail appears. Find
the expected value of his gain.

5. You are in a carnival and you see a game. The rule says that the outcome in the game is a random variable from 1
to 14. If the outcome is even, you win Php 50. If the outcome is odd, you win nothing. If you play the game, what
is the expected gain if there is any?
